The Bryan Story.... Choose your Uni/College Wisely!

Thanks for many of your positive comments about the last Article, "What..?! Only 1A?"... Hhahaha Gave me inspiration to write more! :P Well... after that article.. i was thinking of a Part 2 in some ways or another... Cos... SPM is one helluva crappy 17 years of life that each Malaysian has to endure.... Yea... Let me tell you a story about my good friend... Let's call him "Bryan" (Not his real name!)

Bryan remembered after his highly rushed, adrenalin thomping (is that even a word?!!) I-am-so-screwed moment of receiving that lousy piece of paper that judged us for who we are konon (how many A's you got?!) moment... he and his friends screamed out loud....
"SPM.. **** YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Yea... those were the days.... He continued to lepak with his pals... enjoyed life for a few more weeks to come... then enrolled in College....only to realize that...Damn..... This shyt is happening all over again!!!! No kidding.. He thought... after SPM... study life is almost over... and Every senior or older friend would have used that ever-famous line..... "COLLEGE & UNI LIFE IS DIFFERENT!!!!".... (yea right! No need study meh? sot jor ah!!!)

So.. Bryan came to a point... take Form 6... or Go for College? If take Form 6.. have to cut his hair, redye his hair into pure Asian hair colour (i.e. black.. like hello???) and remove his earrings... and UN-Cool himself....And OMFG.. an all-time favourite.... SCHOOL UNIFORM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Imagine Bryan is in some Northern Schools where they had to cut typically botak style.. or Girls school where every chic looks the same! hahahah Pun intended! :P)

From this point.. let's analyze how many versions of BRYAN do we have here.... k?

Form 6
Face it! Parents boh lui... Family boh lui... yourself boh lui.... Shut up and study harder in Form 6 and Change your TYPEs so that you can do better and make your parents proud... so that you can go into local Uni and earn a diploma or degree so that you can come out and work and give allowance to your parents later... again... remember my last article... where I wrote about being a piece of BBQ Pork? Atleast the BBQ Pork serves a purposes rather than you not studying hard!!!

Science Stream
Continue to be in the science stream... since Bryan was doing Bio Chem or Physics classes and had no clue... (hahaha) Now, if Bryan aims to be an Engineer or a Doctor... well.. by all means. What if Bryan still has no clue.... Well... Bryan can either:
i) Shoot himself right this instance
ii) Ask himself if he wanna be into Medicine, Chemical Line, Drugs (pharmaceutical lah.... what you thinking! hahaha) or being in the "Science" field... SERIOUSLY.... No kidding. Many of Bryan's "Friends" really still stuck themselves in the TYPE 9 category... where they just don't bother. Well good luck... BBQ Pork! let's not waste time talking about the BBQ pork (For Muslim friends who are reading this.. sorry la... don't get offended. it's just a Chinese phrase! :P)
iii) Ask himself if he MIGHT be interested in Accounting, Economics, language, Literature (urgkkk), business... meeting people and sell shyt... telling stories and inspire people (hmmmmm....)
Change stream into Arts

Arts Stream
Face it.. if Bryan was originally an Arts Stream student... most likely.. from Form 1-3.. he already know what he wants and who he wanna be... and decided to go into Arts solely because he wants this line in the future. If he is not that...(Ahem) smart initially, means, he eityher scored less than 2-3 A's in PMR and that he had no choice cause the School doesnt want him in the Science Stream and kind'a foced him into the Arts stream! (Hahah) Sorry.. again.. pun intended. If by now you are getting pissed... pls do not post some damn lame Anonymous comments here cause I spoke the inevitable. Face Facts.. ask you to study baik baik in Form 3 dont want..So dont give me the finger now!

If Bryan is smart enough.. he would have thought carefully....!
1) Become a BBQ Pork and stay in Science stream cos he really dont bother.
2) Stay in Science Stream cos he knows what he wants....in the Science field... OR.. he has doubts... about the fact that the only reason he chose Science in Form 4 was because going into Arts in Form 4 damn malu and like.. no friends there... or his school forces him in!
3) Switch to Arts cause he has doubts perhaps.. Maybe.. MAYBBEEEEE he thinks he might be better off here...

4) Arts easier lorrrr

To those who memang chose arts from Form 4 because they want to... well... good on ya! Stay here... shd probably stop reading liao... :P Anyway...WHAT IF...

Bryan comes to Arts stream.... What line pulak?
Well... talk to your bloody counselor and make him/her work. :P

Now.. if Bryan is in Form 6... he'll spend another 1.5 years there... So switch your types... choose your right subjects/streams... and good luck.. I'll see you in the next 2 years for another story. hahaha....

For 5th formers who are choosing their Uni/College....Here we go...Got a few Bryans here you know...!

1) Don't wanna study liao... just go out and work ... and tells the whole world... wanna rest for a while and study later after "Gaining some experience"... Wow... This Bryan forgotten that he lives in Malaysia and most Malaysian firms look at what cert you have before hiring you.... Well, if you just want to be a normal guy.. live happy go lucky... serves drinks.. cut hair... bla bla bla.. then... ok lor.. Go ahead.... Most likely your salary in the future will not surpass RM1500/mth... (Disclaimer: We do have many miracles amongst us who has no cert and end up a millionaire... Big hand to you... now back to reality....)

2) Choose a college....now in this category alone.. we have a few types of Bryans....

i) Dunno what to study... follow friends lah!!!
Note: I have a few friends who chose Mechanical Engineering cos Banyak kawan going ma... so go lor!!!! They ended up burning the parents' hard earned $$$ of not less than RM5k+ for the semester that they barely survived... oh yea.. some even flunked big time.... I mean.. Come on.. These Bryan's where their parents are not that.. ahem.. rich... THINKS that they have the $$$$... hence, what they do? Steaddddyyyy lah!!! pass also maaaa!!!! or.. Shyt.. fail liao.. nevermind la.. re-sit! .. I mean... telling the world they go to Sunway College or Monash... or Taylors.. I mean... WOW... okay what!!!

FACE FACTS: If dy/dx and trigo is not your favourite subjects... or Physics you don't even score 60... face it... You suck....! Go study something else! I mean... come on...!!!! This field is just not yours!!!! you think you HAVE it.. but you don't! you suck!!! "Work harder can maaaa".. ok.. Once again ladies and gentlemen... YOU SUCK at Physics and Maths... Go study something else!!!! please! Dont follow your friends just because.. your friends like to study those field.. AND jeng! Jeng! Jeng!!!!....

Bryan's GF.... wanna study that .. so Bryan follow saja la... Cos... typical lor... GF ma.. can meet everyday ma... at the age of 17... He found his true LOVE....! He found that he really LIKES AND LOVEEEESSSS the GF so much that he would "Die" for her.... Aduih..... Go laaa.. Go.... No problem... :)

ii) Indecisive Bryan
This is where .... Bryan is not very sure what field he wants to do.. but he is better than the above Bryan at least he won't go into a field where his friends of chic goes into simply co there's company! I mean Come on!!!!!!! you are studying not because you want to stay with your friends!!!!

Let me share with you a typical Friendship lifecycle in Malaysia...
Primary Education
Secondary Form 1-3
Form 4-5 (Esp when your hormones start to pump in and opposite sex plays an important role here)
FOrm 6 or College/Uni Life
Work Life
Work Life 2
Work Life 3
Work Life 4?
Work Life 5???
We attend your funeral....

Friends come and go... Good friends stay... Some don't (That's why they are lousy ones!) Some kept in touch.. some even got married to each other... so.. CHILL!!! If your friends are good ones... tthey will stay in touch. Dont go following them!

So..back to our main topic... What Field???

i) Engineering:
You need to define which one! There's Mechanical, Civil, Electrical & Electronic Engineering! Lay man terms... You like machines???(Mechanical).. Build buildings/architectural (Civil) ... High tech gadgets and shyt like that (E&E).....Most "Bryans" who wanna be an Engineer would have known about which one of the Engineering fields they are interested in already... So... These types of bryans I don't really have to talk much cause most likely they are the TYPE 1s or 2s.... (Type2s.. pls la.. go out and get more friends...!) Good luck in your future ya! :) Make sure you build 'em bridges properly or buildings... so they wont's crack or leak... (woo hooo OUCH! :P)

ii) IT
Now.. actually.. this field alone got plentttttty of areas to choose from... The typical being Information Technology per se. These are mostly for those computer whiz kids... those Dota idiots who beat the shyt out of me most of the time... or they read codes on the computer screen and can understand them... like seriously....! This type of Bryan's... don't think anything else... just bloody go for this... Choose to major in some areas if you already know what you want....

We also have the Comp Science, Comp Engineering degrees... We have the designers.... those stuff... And if these type of Bryans...most likely from form 3 since he started Dota-ing or CS-ing... he would have known which field he wants to!... Good Luck...

Now.. our major concern is those Bryans who THINKS that Comp Science or IT Diploma/Degree is cool and wanna "Try it out"... again... my bottom line... Choose wisely... Go understand the field before coming into this before I call you a piece of BBQ Pork again.

iii) Business
There are many business degrees out there... question is which one? Now... A lot of these new "University-College" people will tell you how "highly-accredited" their diplomas or degrees are....! Of course laaa.. you forgot their rice bowl is .. TADA... from that particular College!!!!!!! Be careful upon selection. I have a friend who has a diploma that was "Accredited by the LAN - Lembaga Akreditasi Negara" (Now different name ady... dunno call what.. but same shyt) ... only to find out a few years later that the Diploma is not recognised by the government or the LAN department.. In other words... No LAN use (Hey... not vulgar word ya...)

Those 3+0...4+0.. please study them carefully.... They will show you letters chopped and signed by the new LAN or whatever department there is in Malaysia... but at the end of the day.... you will still have a no LAN use cert if you don't find it out before you sign up for the course!

When you have selected a particular Uni course etc... they will put you through Foundation level.. then Diploma level 1-3 or maybe advanced... then Degree... or some would tell you Foundation.. then Year 1-4... bla bla bla the list goes on! Do note that once you have signed up ... your Foundation or Year 1 MIGHTTTTT not be recognized by another... so-called University-College ya! Especially when many people wanna study in one particular Uni.. then decided to switch to another... you will (again) waste a lot of your parents' hard earned $$$$ cause the new Uni-College you enrolled in.. would tell you that the former cert you got... not recognized wan... cause that Uni from UK or Timbaktu is not very popular wan bla bla bla!!!!! Then, they say... "Nevermind la.. we have checked with our (experienced) Chancellor what not.. that this new Uni will now accept you, BUT (there's always a catch) you have to do additional semesters.... i.e. more $$$$$$$!

Find out more about the College/Uni you want to enrol at first... Don't because they have "affiliations" with some UK canggih names that you can't even pronounce.....you reckon that your future piece of paper that cost your parents 40k+ is actually a piece of crap.... :)

If it's Business related degrees or diplomas.... you might even want to look at ABE, CIM etc... these are professional courses where they are recognized worldwide ya!

iii) Accounting?
Some already debating that they want to take CIMA or ACCA already... and without much knowledge of what they are.. or actually what they stand for! Friends say maaaa.... CIMA not so good.. ACCA better... more recognized... these sorta Bryans....(again) shd be BBQ porks... cause they listen to their "friends"... i kind'a forgotten Bryan's Friends are all professors and doctors or great accountants eh?

CIMA is Chartered institute of Management Accountants and ACCA is Association of Chartered Certified Accountants .... Do these words mean anything to you? I bet 9/10 wouldn't have a clue.. just like Bryan!!!!

Laymen term.... CIMA is more towards management accounting... ACCA is more towards Auditing etc etc... Now if these laymen terms also you don't understand.. and yet.. you are like this Bryan who really has some form of passion for Accounts (urgkkk)... shut up and do LCCI first please... or some basic foundation in Accounting....

You have to go through some phases before you actually know whether CIMA or ACCA suits you better... So, Bryan shd really start with those basic accounting.... decide later cos your lecturers will guide you and at the end.. you yourself will know CIMA or ACCA is better... Otherwise... go be a BBQ Pork.... :)

Other fields:
Now.. there are plenty more fields to go into for Bryan... but this writer really can only speak about so much that he knows.. hence... good luck OTHER BRYANS....! :)

Now...What if Bryan Studies his Form 6... and comes out.. and didn't actually get an offer to a local degree... harrrrrrr..... jeng jeng jeng......!!!!!!!!

1) Firstly, dai sei... cos never Change TYPEs... still stay like before in Form 5... so.. cry also no tears eh! :P
2) He has options now.... just like the above.... but do note... If a sixth former who fails to get into Local Uni... with the STPM cert and after yet another 1.5years of torture... Bryan comes out and joins some College... he only exchanges probably 6months of the foundation level of the private studies. This means.... Bryan's peers would have been in Year 2 by the time he wants to do private education after form 6... OR let me put it in a more torturous way.... Bryan's Juniors.. most likely 2 years younger.. might end up in the same class as he is! Cause... Bryan's juniors who went straight into College after Form 5... spends only 6 months for Foundation or at most 1 year (for those bloody LCLY Colleges like T******) ...

SUMMARY
What should Bryan Do?

i) Smart Bryan... already know his destiny (konon)... Go ahead... Good luck in your future and Change your Types!!!! :P
ii) So-So bryan.... But already decided.... Go for it!!!! If that's what you wanna do.. don't follow your friends etc etc... Go study that field/line!!!

iii) The SH Bryan... Dont waste your parents' money... spend 2 more years in Form 6 to see if it really changes your type and keep you focused on what you realllllly wanna do. otherwise.. go out and work!

All in all... Choose your courses or fields wisely... Don't make a mistake and it will simply cost loads of money to make that U Turn later. And once you have selected that course.... Don't turn back and focus on achieving good results! Don't tell me the owners of Facebook is a College drop-out.. or a lot of millionaires are just SPM holders.... The right thing to point out is... ARE YOU ONE OF THEM? if you are.. you would not be reading my article by now cause half way through you would have thought "Crap! Waste time.. not worth my time reading"... Hence... ya... face facts...!

WHAT???? only 1 A in SPM?!

I had to type something when I got so much news from my Leos about their results. Some were very happy because they scored straight A's... Some scored so-so... some only had a handful, some had none at all! Well .... Gaining Straight A's is something you should be extremely proud of! You have done well.. and congratulations! Also to those who scored the number of A's... Bravo!!!!! Let me tell you this... My sibblings... Elder and younger brother and me.. with all the A's we got during our time at SPM... probably still cannot classified as a STRAIGHT A's student. Mark my words... all three of us combined you know! hahaha!

Let's start to classify the types of students you are:

TYPE 1: Straight A's and active in your extra-curricular activities

TYPE 2: Straight A's and stay at home, number of friends on Facebook exceed 500, but number of real friends ... "10 fingers can count all" (typical chinese translation.. my apologies)

TYPE 3: 6-8 A's... not too bad in your social life... and very happy of your results cause you earned it!

TYPE 4: 6-8 A's... very active in your social life.. and not happy with the Type 1 & 2... cause you think that you should be there! You are now blaming yourself for not spending enough time in your studies and you are thinking the famous phrase... "I wasted my time in XXXX club/association.. I should have bla bla bla...."

TYPE 5: 4-5 A's... very happy with whatever you have achieved... cause you led a life at school.. got friends.. got family... got facebook (hahaha) and you're just happy! No issues!

TYPE 6: 1-3 A's... Very active in social life.. FB most likely >1000 friends.. real friends lagi banyak... Should be some key persons in their clubs, associations etc etc... Don't bother much about all the other types as above.. cos you felt that you led your life happily.. gained a lot of street-smart experience.. and don't bother about anything in the world at this stage

TYPE 7: Just as Type 6, but the problem is you damn tulan with yourself now... cause you felt that you should have studied harder.. you shouldn't have joined all those clubs or association! Your parents are screaming down at you.... for such lousy marks and that you disgrace them... The word that constantly pop up in your mind right now is... "I should have..."... or "I Could Have...."

TYPE 8: No A's... Still ok to you.. you are really not that affected la. Chill-ing all your way and laughing at the Type 7s!

TYPE 9: No A's... Blames the world... don't care.. and no idea about whatever...

Let's analyze now aite!!!

TYPE 1.. well congrats! You earn it.. studied hard... well done! For the Type1, I respect you really. How I wish I could be just like you! You know, I have friends like you peepz... Active in all that you do at school... prefect maybe.. scouts? Leo? Interactor? Bandie? Debator? Someone in school lah! You are awesome wei. You work hard and play hard! Good luck in our future! Don't look back now and say that you have achieved this great and awesome results and start slacking k? Your SPM and high school life is over! Now's College and Uni time! Continue to be that top student out there and continue to enjoy your College & Uni life! Definitely you'll love it as it's a whole new ball game!!!!!

TYPE 2: Firstly, congrats lah.... Secondly.. Sorry I have to say this... You might end up with thick glasses somewhere... maybe earning a couple of thousand and driving a brand new proton sudah cukup makan gua? A small house and 2 kids already cukup. Good on ya... But really... if you end up in some Uni.. stop facebooking and go out there to actually "LIKE" what your REAL friends are talking about man... Seriously! I mean.. ya lor.. you will most likely end up working for the TYPES 4-9 anywayzzz... think about it... Staying in this "TYPE" will make you so old in thoughts that you would end up being a bloody anti-socialite. But then again, if that's the journey of life you want to lead... Go ahead man! Really... and my apologies for pointing out the inevitable.

TYPE 3, 5, 6, 8... Do you know.. how many people out there are just like you? You'll survive in the open , real world faster than anyone else! You have principles in life and you would have no issues mixing around with anyone, from any race, country or religion cause you have the brains and you go for it!

TYPE 4, 7... I think you should just go out and get and chill! You need to move yourselves to the 3,5,6,8....! You have the brains too.. but you have the jealousy heart and soul in you that should have been wiped out! You need to seriously think about the examination is something to challenge yourself and not against one another! Life is a competition. Whether it is a healthy one or a dead serious competition... you'd better stay clear pls! You may have the brains... but if you let the heart tells you where to go and lead you to the "I will do all I can to bring him/her down" mentality.. then you'd better stop that feeling right now! How to?

Oh well.... look yourself in the mirror....scold the person facing you kau kau!!!!! :) It might work. Hahahaha..Otherwise...

Chill... and work harder next time! Life is just at the cross roads... not even started yet!

Types 9: Erm... go get a job and make yourselves useful la. Don't waste your parents' money for tertiary studies no more.. better let them use it for a European holiday or something.. at least they earn it! :) Otherwise.. it's time to think about your life and move yourselves to the other Types already lehh! it's time to make your past 17 years of life... a slightly more useful one.. not to the world or your family yet.. but atleast to yourself! Think about it! It ain't cheap raising you... Like Chinese Saying... your parents should have gave birth to a block of Honey BBQ Pork. atleast the prok serves a purpose. :)

Time to wake up from your life and make them proud of you!

Summary
I scored 3A's in my SPM back then. I was very active in my Leo Club, school band and prefect activities! The number of extra-curricular certs that I have received would add up to at least an inch thick (then)! To blame it on my activities, I must say it will be a little to harsh to do. But I did. YES.. I was really a TYPE 7! No kidding! Still failing to think that I could have balanced out my activities and my studies... I just couldn't be bothered with my life and went into Form 6.

When I was in Form 6... I must have thought I was a bloody Romeo or something.. and because of chicks and all... I kind'a screwed up my life and also at the same time I was really not studying much. I didn't fail any subjects though.... but I had 1A, 1B, 1C, 2 Ds in my STPM! i only really tried to study 2-3 months before the exams! Throughout the 1.5 years in my Form 6 life... I think I hurt many of my friends by choosing wrong words and doing the stupidest shyt anyone could have thought of (we'll leave that for another blog post k?)....

Hence, when I got the results... I kind'a like ... stayed at TYPE 7... blame the world.. blame this and that... and forgetting to blame that one thing that is undeniably the root to my "failure"... ME.

Well, application to the local university came....at that time... we didn't have online submission.. no facebook nor friendster even.. for friends to post "I'm going to apply for this bla bla bla" on their status. We just had word of mouth! Yup!!! I grew up in the Malaysian Internet Revolutionary period of time.... hence.. yeah.. MIRC was a cool thing then! Oh ya. ICQ came about later! hahahaah! Those were the days man!

Anyway... I applied for some courses and yes.. I didn't get anything! Yup!!! Nothing! So where do I turn back to? My parents of course! My parents and elder brother supported me in my tertiary education... Both of them were just teachers in public schools and my brother was only an accounts executive then... he just finished his accounting course and started working not too long ago then.

Well... I told myself that... all my life as a TYPE 7... and failing to see it when I was like that.. i started to think otherwise. I told myself... I can do it if I want to.... I changed my life entirely. I seriously and really.. really studied hard... cause I knew the extra tuition classed my dad had to give was to support me in my private tertiary education. True enough... I bought loads of books...revised constantly with my friends... and stayed focused! Well.... the results...? In that sem, 2 students scored straight A's for our Level 1 Business Diploma... and I was one of them. I then applied for a degree completion course doing an ADP course (American Degree Program) and I graduated top of my class.... and gave a speech at my graduation ceremony! My parents were thrilled!

Oh.. just incase if you are wondering... when i said I migrated from TYPE 7 upwards.. I really didn'y go to the extend of a TYPE 2 ... hahaha... I was the Org. Chairperson for my college's Prom Nite... and in 96, I obtained Top Leo (Omega).... I organized a project called Literacy Week that was a nominee for the International Lions Club Literacy and Cultural Award... Though the project didn't win, being able to be selected by the Multiple District 308 (Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei) for the award was already something I am proud of! I also went back to my school band and actively supervised projects, practices etc etc etc!

I think I managed to migrate from TYPE 7 to somewhat of either a TYPE 1 or 3...

NOTE: Telling you all these is not to flare my successes. It's not to tell you what awards I got.. what achievements I obtained whatsoever! telling you all these was because i wanted to tell you that I realize at some point that.. "IT'S TIME TO CHANGE"!!!! Some people see it back in Form 1 when they screwed up their UPSR (hahahahah.. wtf!) Some after their PMR.. some after SPM.. and it wasn't until my Tertiary years.. my college/uni years... that I realize I screwed up my entire high school life.. and because of me... my family had to work twice harder to put me through college! Even so... HOW MANY PEOPLE out there would not realize even until they die that they stayed at a certain TYPE for life?

I have friends who have stayed in TYPES 7 .. or 9... or whatever you wanna call it.... even at Uni... and they ended up failing their subjects etc etc.. and become a college/uni drop out.. and end up selling some stuff for some companies.. earning a starting pay of not more than RM1200/mth? And still... complaining about their lives.. bla bla bla???!!! How often do you hear some people.. seniors... saying the following:

"Don't follow my footsteps.. Study hard now. It's your future"
"I f***ed up my life... cause I didn't study well"
"When i was your age.. I was bla bla bla bla bla"

WHAT TYPE ARE YOU????!
It's time to make a difference... If you are a LEO Member... and you were serving as a Leo during my terms as RCC or DC, I am sure you would have been to a M.A.D project (Making a Difference) for the community as well as for the environment... But have you ever thought that.. it's really the time to stop and MAKE A DIFFERENCE in your LIFE now!!!!

If you are highly active in your activities, but seriously suck at your studies.. It is time to really consider doing a lifecheck and balance things out! If you are a studious Type 2....Really.. go out there and stop complaining why you have no friends! You are a smart person.. but it's time to CHILL!!!! Go watch a movie from the actual cinema rather than downloading from youtube!

This is your LIFE!!!! Do you want to just drive a small car when you grow up? Live in a small sized apartment or house? Work 9-5pm and end up at home having no idea what life is all about? (Disclaimer: Sorry to those who are in this state... my respect for you if you feel that your life is full with this conditions... My apologies for using your life as an example. I do not mean to insult your current state)

Time to switch and upgrade your TYPEs. Time to Make a Change in your life and Make a Difference for your future!!!!Time to strike that balance and start to think....!

Instead of choosing one of his Directors or his children, he decided to do something different. He called all the young executives in his company together.

He said, "It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO. I have decided to choose one of you. "The young executives were Shocked, but the boss continued. "I am going to give each one of you a SEED today - one very special SEED. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you.
I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one
I choose will be the next CEO."

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed. Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.

Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew.

Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still
nothing.

By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't have a plant and he felt like a failure.

Six months went by -- still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn't say anything to his colleagues, however, he just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - He so wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to the CEO for inspection.

Jim told his wife that he wasn't going to take an empty pot. But she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim felt sick to his stomach, it was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right. He took his empty pot to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at
the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful -- in all shapes and sizes. Jim put his empty pot on the floor and many of his colleagues laughed, a few felt sorry for him!

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives.

Jim just tried to hide in the back. "My, what great plants, trees and flowers you have grown," said the CEO. "Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!"

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered the Financial Director to bring him to the front. Jim was terrified. He thought, "The CEO knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me fired!"

When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed - Jim told him the story.

The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced to the young executives, "Behold your next Chief Executive Officer!

His name is Jim!" Jim couldn't believe it. Jim couldn't even grow his seed.

"How could he be the new CEO?" the others said.

Then the CEO said, "One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead - it was not possible for them to grow.

All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Jim was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new
Chief Executive Officer!"

* If you plant honesty, you will reap trust

* If you plant goodness, you will reap friends

* If you plant perseverance (Consistency, Persistency...), you will reap contentment

A senior Lion forwarded this to me and I reckon i should share this video with all you peepz out there! I'm all EMO whenever it comes to short films, art films and any emo-fied films that one can ever produced. No kidding. When i was younger, I cried watching Beast (almost) die in the arms of Belle in Beauty and the Beast. I'm no good at tear-jerkers and that's no kidding. Yea yea yea.. laugh all you want... but this one.. touches me deeply. Take that 10 minutes off and happy viewing!!!!

Imagine if YOU are in the movie as the lead actor. Imagine YOU are the President or Org. Chairperson leading your members... WORDS matter!!!! Key learnings from this:

1) As a leader, whatever comes out from your mouth MATTER! The motivation. The thoughts. The spirit. The feel! If your member really suck-ed at doing some job you gave him/her. YOU have the choice of (a) screaming (b) insulting (c) scolding (d) saboh-ing (e) sarcastically commenting..... OR.. none of the (a) to (e)....! Why don't you divert the negative energy to a more positive one like....
"I know you have done your best.. and I know you have tried hard. Let's see what went wrong"
"YOU.. yes.. YOU... have contributed a lot of time and effort into this. yes.. it didn't turn out the way it did. Why not we sit down with everyone and see how we can rectify future problems"

2) Leaders loosing focus! As the main character was soooooo focused on making Victoria smile.. he lost his entire focus and energy.. A leader MUST never let that happen! Remember to try your best and not to loose focus! Once you loose focus, your negative energy will be transferred to the rest of the people. If you are the President.. THEY look up to you.. YOUR members!!!!!

What Kind of Balls do you Have?

I am sure the title would have attracted 9 out of 10 people! :) Anyway, in fairness, this theory is superbly important when it comes to the leading and management of your Leo Club, association, workplace or any organization for that matter! Treat your members or Board of Directors.. or members of an Organizing Committee, as balls... Okay, sounds wrong, and guyz, wipe that smirk off your face! haha!

Now, by now you must be wondering how can balls be related to membership management? Why, how about if I tell you all your members are different types of "balls"... and that your goal is to get these balls from this side of the field, to the opposite side of the field. See my point? So, the goal is simple... Get the Balls from Point A to Point B.. right?

That sounds easy. Just roll them, you must be thinking. how about this... let's go through now.. the types of BALLS that we have in our club aite!

The Normal Balls
These are like your typical football, basketball or any normal balls that rolls whenever you move them. It only depends on how much strength you use to push, these balls will just move... and they will take on that "momentum" and move on.

All you do is to "Motivate" these balls by giving a slight push, guide the ball a little with directions and then... you will be able to move these balls from Point A to Point B, achieving your goals anytime you want. Very "co-operative" balls I must say!

Fast Balls

Now.. be careful of these type of balls. They are "hyper-active"!!! These balls are light and fast and when you hit it, kick it.. it goes very far.. very fast! Sometimes its good to keep some of these type of balls simply because of the fact that by the time you wait for the "Normal" balls to come, the fast balls would have reached the destination. These fast balls are good, but you as the leader need to control the speed and pace at times. It's pointless to have the entire group of Normal balls, and only 1-2 "fast Balls". Well, a Fast Ball may reach the goals, but might also have tendency to over-shoot it! and that might also be a problem. A Fast Ball over shooting its target might be difficult to trace. The ball might end up too far away to be retrieved. And you would loose your Fast Ball.

METAL BALLS
Metal Balls are the ones that are "heavy"... and roll very slowly. It might need extra push and guidance in order for it to reach your goals. It tends to stop, simply because it is "heavy". As a leader, you need to identify what are the areas that make these types of balls "heavier". Sometimes, you can't blame them too. These balls are made that way. They didn't want to be heavy you know! So, as a leader, are there any ways to decrease the weight of the metal balls? Can we put some oil to ease the "journey"? Can we arrange for a guide to "lead" the metal ball, or kick it every now and then, to let the ball move?

HIGH TECH BALLS

Fu-yohhhh! These balls are so geng, they actually can fly and reach your destination on its own. You just have to click a button and it'll just go! Some of these balls can also lead other balls.. shoot some electricity, use telekinesis (like jean Grey) to move the other balls and also turn into a large robot and pick up the rest to the destination.

The only problem is, these balls have a mind of their own! you may be the person with the control equipment, but they might just over-ride you one day, and Arnold might have to come back from the future to save your A**! (Khum wit meh if U wanah lif) You must always check the activities of these balls. if you don't, you might end up loosing other balls too.

SENSITIVE BUT EXPENSIVE ANCIENT BALLS
Be smart la ya. These are exclusive ancient balls. They are sensitive, but will also get from Point A to B if you know how to "handle" these balls. They are very expensive, but sometimes, rolling them too often might not be wise cause if the balls break... you had it! Be careful when it comes to these balls. If you do not know how to handle them, please make sure you consult those who know... There are "equipment" made to "carry" these balls from Point A to B. You cannot throw them away or ignore their presence simply because your "family" rules state that these Ancient Balls MUST be around because they possess the mystical powers of speech where they can deliver orders but never fulfill them. Some of these balls are simply there to make your lives miserable. So.. remember.. HANDLE THEM WITH CARE. Do not throw them away, do not try to break them! Just move them along... you'll be fine! :)

Last but not least.... THE TITANIUM SQUARE BALLS!!!!!

I must say.. these kind of balls are the worst of them all. They are there and they cant roll. They are there but they cant move! Sometimes, you tend to ask yourself.. WHYYYYYYYY ah these balls are lying around. Well.. look at it on the brighter side! This doesnt present you with a problem! I believe it gives you a CHALLENGE!!!! The challenge is to move these Square balls from point A to Point B! Now, it's not easy! Cause you kick them, your feet hurts! You push them, it barely moves (titanium ma.. so heavy how to move!) So, instead of complaining about how "square" these balls are, why don't you SERVE with PASSION... bring out the balls in you.. gather your BALLS up... and perhaps, a few Normal Balls and fast balls with the help of a High Tech ball... you might be able to roll the Square ball? Or....

Why not try to mould the edges of the ball a little. Make them "rounder" and I know it's not easy. You have to have the right equipment to do it! Then, with the help of others, move the Square Ball! it'll move... eventually it will. The thing is..

If YOUUUUU are able to move the other balls from this side to the other... why leave this one out? The thing is, if you leave the Square Balls out... YOU LOOSE! You might not know, maybe, when the Square Balls go to the other side... it might turn into something else that you might regret not having it there? The challenge is not leaving it behind.. the challenge it to make sure all BALLS get to the other side. When that takes place.... You are inevitably.. A GREAT Leader of all Balls....! i mean.. erm.. you get what I mean! :)

The Brick Wall Challenge & the Jumpers

I recently spoke to a "bruder" (trying to act young.. sorry) cause he had some frustrations and disappointment about being in a youth organization as he always have felt there are obstacles ahead of him, especially that he feels there are those senior members who are "controlling" him and his members, and also... not respecting them as individuals. The complaints have always been as follows:

i) He should have respected us before asking us to call him or address him properly as RESPECT is earned and not given

ii) Who does he think he is? Very big meh?

iii) I dont like him, his style, his method

iv) He Yong Suey (cantonese for 'face problem')

v) Outside our activities, why do we still have to address him as XXXX? We should be just normal people what. I call by the name enough lah...!

Well, let me tell you all a story of JUMPERS and BRICK WALLS.

Inevitably, in any organization.. be it government, private sector, school, Leos or Lions Clubs, other NGOs, or even in our family.. there is always the BRICK WALL in front of us. Now, we need to understand one very simple point... Sometimes, these brick walls are there for a reason. Valid reasons would be... they are there to assert uniformity, discipline, support, encouragement and so on. There are many types of brick walls. Let's start with the good ones....

There are those brick walls that are there to support other structures.. To ensure that when the entire "building" is built, the brick wall is always there to support the base.. the roof, the sides everything!

There are also those brick walls that encourages growth and don't mind the growth is actually dependent on the brick wall... Without the brick wall, these "plants" would probably not see the light of day...Some brick walls don't even mind if the plants "overshadow" or "overtaken" its surface... cause to these brick walls.. as long as they see the light of day.. they get to live .. and be happy.. these brick walls would rather stay in the shadows...

And Of course... there are the brick walls that don't mind and allow you to creatively "use" them to be converted to something else? These brick walls would go to the extend of ensuring that ... as long as you are happy and successful, even the brick wall converts itself to something else.. it's fine to them...!

However... there are those brick walls... that are there, simply to ensure that nothing else lives. Some feel that these walls are useless and they are there and blocks growth! What about the old walls, dirty and ugly looking ones that are really a bad sight to just look at? Not only they are there to block growth, other "insects" and rubbish grow in them!

What about those walls that are built simply to ensure that no one gets out.. or gets in!? The Brick wall that is so long and strong... if you are within it's areas, you would feel "small", feel useless at times, and feel that... "What is a world without these walls? What would people on the other side be doing?"

I BET SOMETIMES YOU WISH THIS WOULD HAPPEN!!!!

HOWEVER... some brick walls are not easily crushed or taken down! You organize a battalion of army and bulldozers to bring the wall down... and the only thing you managed to "hurt" is actually the surface.. and within the walls... there is a stronger layer! Then, you might just realize that... you are just being a dumb and silly person for trying the "break" the wall as all your efforts and energy are wasted! Not forgetting also, what would others think of you and how would they feel about you trying to bring down the wall? Have you ever thought... "bringing down the wall" would probably be a silly thing to do as ..

At the end of the day, you didn't hurt the wall at all (simply its a brick wall for crying out loud!) and the person you hurt most is YOURSELF!!!! Aiyo.. pain mahhh... try to tembus ... your hand sakit only.. stupid!!!

Drive a car and crash into the wall in hoping to bring down the wall??!!! HELLO!!! Got brains or not?!

You will bleed ... and do you think the brick wall will cry for you and come and help you recover? Oh please.. It's a BRICK WALL. If it has a face, a heart and a mouth, it'll probably laugh at you and talk to the wall next to him how dumb you are for trying to bring him down. Will the other "walls" help you? Oh puh-leaseee.. they are walls. Walls of the same bricks ..err stack together? haha!"

INSTEAD...

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED....

HOW can you get to the other side of the wall.. without having to crash a car directly into it.. punch it, bring it down.. or do anything stupid that will hurt yourself more than it will hurt the wall? have you ever thought... instead of going "against" the brick walls... trying to break it down, why not... DON'T Break it down...?

Or.. have you ever thought of another pointer...

Your growth & development are stopped...

simply because of YOU

and not really the brick wall? I mean.. SERIOUSLY....!

Why not you do something else and

GO AROUND IT, maybe?

All these while .. have you ever thought that whatever you do, you keep thinking about the brick wall! You will blame everything on the brick wall...! You will complain about the brick wall... You will always use the existence of the brick wall being there and THATTTTT.. is the cause of your failure!

Have you ever thought of the fact that.. the brick wall WILL ALWAYS BE THERE whether you like it or not! The Brick Wall was there even BEFORE you were even born! you reckon you will be able to bring it down? Pleaseeee lah!

To live a happy life, why not change your perception of the BRICK WALL? Why don't you try to:

i) Move around it, climb over it, or Jump over it?

ii) If the Wall is really that long, why don't you re-think your methods of getting to the other side of the wall? Why don't you MAKE THAT U TURN, and go back to where you have started and try to look for another possible way out?

There is always a solution to every possible problem you face in life. The only thing that is stopping you here is not really the BRICK WALL. It is YOU... YOURSELF!!!!

If you continue thinking about the brick wall blocking you in every way possible, then.. you will FOREVER live within the areas of the wall! You will FOREVER be lost and you will FOREVER be filled with hatred, anger and everything around you would seem more negative than ever because simply YOU chose to see the Wall as a PROBLEM and not a CHALLENGE!

Take my advice. Don't avoid and ignore the wall. The most successful person in this world would be able to make that wall a benefit to his/her growth rather than to destroy it. Making your enemy your friend is never easy, but worth a shot. You will see it from a different point of view one day if you choose to see it differently.

Branding Asserts Presence ....!

Over the last couple of years, probably some Omega Leos will tell you Lion Alan Thoo and his favourite line..."BRaaanNNNndddDDDiiinnggggg!!!!!!! might strike a thought in mind that goes "ya ya ya". To be honest with you, branding is a term in marketing where it is very essential in preserving the existence of an organization, a product or service or even an individual. Let's look at the products and services that we have in our market at random...

Out of the 6 logos above, which one does not strike anything at all? Which one you do not know? What about the popular phrases.....

Which drink will assure you "Minum XXX Anda Jadi Sihat Dan Kuat!"

Ring a bell? Well, if you already know 70% of the above, this means you have already bought into the products and services. Do you know how much large corporations pay to assert branding into our daily lives? A simple layman theory would be a short 30second advertisement on prime time free-to-air TV would be able to get you nothing less than a Kancil! that is just ONE advertisement alone.

BRANDING is very important to the Lions movement.. to our work and what we do! Take a look at the website of Lions International and study the colours. Even the new Lions logo follows the colours and blended well with the website. The entire Sydney International Lions Convention also bears this image..

BRANDING exists amongst Leo Clubs and Lions Clubs although most of you might not realize it.

i) Vest with badges - "Oh he must be from the Leo Club"
ii) Leo Club Banner - "Thereeee... Leo Club again la!"
iii) Charity Event... with lots of people in yellow vests .. and without seeing the logo..."Lions Club again lorrrr"

Have you also noticed that some of the trademarks and traditions that were brought down from your seniors were actually Branding practices all these while.. that you don't even realize it?

i) Have you ever seen members of the Leo Club of Sam Tet, Ipoh, wearing any other T-Shirts besides that Blue-ish one with the yellow words and Leo logo at the back? As in any official or even fellowship functions (mostly) ...

ii) Ever seen Leo Cabinet officers wearing a different coloured coat at official events besides the Banquet Nite?

iii) Who would ever forget the creative ROARRRR of Batu 8 Leo Club with their foot-thomp-ing sequence as well as Sri KL's "Roar..roar..roar..roar.. meow!" ? What about Penang City's "T-T-t-t-T-T-Tttttt"

iv) What about the strong branding of IMO via personalities?

v) Have you ever seen how the Andersonians take photos? Am sure the banner is very well in placed! Not to mention the posts!

v) How about the LTv!, Leo Idol Season 3 logo...the 40 Years Logo ??? Even MLSA has reached a certain 'frustration' point where people go.. WTH?!

Sometimes, one might not realize it but your club.. your leadership and your management.. have already brought your club's image and its brand to a certain level. Now... the trick here is...

Do you realize what to do next? or where to start? Or what am I babbling about since the first paragraph (If it is really the last one, please stop reading this posting and you might just wanna go back to Pokemon comics pls)

Branding exists in our society.. our lives.. and Our Work here as Leos and Lions! The question is how are you able to bring your club into the NEXT LEVEL.. How are you going to be able to use the branding of your club to your benefits? let's explore ya:

i) Does your club have a logo? Do you change that every year.. or every 2-3 years once?!
ii) Does your club have any colours that you all have been using all these while?
iii) How different is your Roarrrrr? is it just "ABC Roar! ABC Roar! ABC Roar! Roar! Roar!" (i.e. lame)
iv) Do you change your club t-shirt EVERY YEAR?!
v) Have you ever thought of ensuring all BOD arranging badges on your vests in a certain special way?
vi) Does your club have a blog? an FB account or fanpage?
vii) We sent 20 people to a function and at the end of the day, we were not even noticed...! (like duhhh.. is it their fault?)
viii) Do you know what I am talking about (totally random!!! wth!? hahahaha)

BRANDING is not just about physical outlook only. Branding can also be personalities of your members, BOD or the way you carry yourselves in the eyes of many. Let's try this:

i) Crazy, fun - PJI
ii) Big projects, creative - GTM
iii) Talents - IMO
iv) Seriously disciplined and no guys can go 5 ft near their members - AMC (Sorry, during my time - hahaha)
v) Kiasu - Leo Club of XXXX (hahahaha.. am not even going to try say this. later I kena scolding again for making fun to assert a point)

See my point or not?

To be able to be recognized... To be able to project an image of great leadership.... management.. and PRESENCE... it all boils down to BRANDING! A wise man once told me this:

"Branding ensures Substance

Substance ensures Strength

Strength Gives you Presence

Presence ensures SUCCESS!!!!!!"

You need to start to think ...
WHAT our club's brand?
WHY are we different from the others?
HOW do we ensure that our club's presence is felt when we walk into registration and the venue?
Is changing my "Roarrrr" going to be enough?

Is sticking to the same T-Shirt going to be enough?
Is disciplined members and well-trained ones going to be enough?
Is being "crazy" going to be enough?

The answers lie in your hands.. my dear Presidents, Vice Presidents and B.O.D....! You make that change. You make that difference... YOU DEFINE YOURSELF!

It's only then.. we would have a strong District that proudly shouts out...

The Dangers of PSSTAS Disease

I remember posting something about this deadly disease sometime ago... (Click here for the old posting) and to be honest with you... I am seeing some of you who might already have gotten infected but you might just not realize it! PSSTAS is ... fortunately curable.... There is a known cure for it but it takes time and it also takes one's determination to get over it because it is not viral or caused by bacteria... mainly caused by genetics that involves Egoism.

Scientists have discover the Ego genes is a defect and mostly affects the male species more than that of the female ones. But, females also have to be careful as the PSSTAS might just attack you even though the tendency is towards the testosterone of the guys....

There are also case studies that were proven by many pharmaceutical companies where PSSTAS attacks one to the extend that the person do not realize they are hallucinating and showing symptoms... and also develop terribly bad habits of mankind.... this is very serious and really need to be dealt with.....!

Symptoms of PSSTAS:

1. You are feeling really SS (Syok Sendiri) and Bangga-land when you recently attended some functions...

2. You feel so proud of yourself to the extend that you go round telling people that you have achieved that award and no one else deserves it better than you

3. You start expecting your juniors to respect you to the max... and start to scold them or show LCLY face(arrogant.. in short form of a rude Cantonese phrase - sorry! No other word best fit this description)

4. You expect your juniors, Omega Leos, and even Lions to treat you slightly or a whole lot more differently cause you are the Top award winner mahhhhh....

5. You start to develop the thought of the following...! You start to feel the following and these lines pop up here and then...:

i) Why should I have done so much in the past!?

ii) Why should I have contributed so much?

iii) Why should I have done all those projects?

iv) I should have just joined another club where I dont need to do anything at all!!! I

v) I feel foolish now

vi) No one respects me anymore. Get this award also no point. I better gather up my other friends (with the same symptoms) and start talking bad about the whole wide world including those who cared for you before!

vii) I am not going to join any Omega Club anymore (For Alphas)

viii) I am going to quit soon or make myself less active cause everyone else hates me (For Omega)

THE CURE......

i) Smack yourself three times.. really hard... at the back of your forehead. If you cant reach, ask your mother to help you

ii) Look at the picture next to you and LOOK AT IT EVERYDAY to tell yourself how lucky you are that you even have a house to live in and stop bi*ching about ppl not respecting you, ppl not layan you.. ppl not being happy with you....

Tell yourself that you are one lucky fella that you actually still had the chance to eat that lousy tasteless pack of RM3 bihun at the Leo Forum and survived the entire fiscal year after kena scolding non-stop from Alan Thoo......That you don't have to search the pile of rubbish hoping to find a leftover piece of bread and basi punya milo packet.

iii) Recite the LEO Pledge one more time.... 3 times a day, until you finish. This is even the best Antibiotic around... but you must finish it!!!!! If you already have forgotten how... Go ask Jeremy Goh to sing I PLEDGE to you (but you might have to pay him for the taxi fare and some angpow money for his time.

iv) Shut the **** up, and start to think again.... that the Top Award given to you... is just one lousy piece of paper for recognition, the trophy will be good when you have an itch at the back and you cant reach it.... and that badge is good for you to be used as a pin for baby V's diapers.....!

Well.. then.. you shall be fine.....! :)

AWARDS

Awards presented to individuals or clubs.. are merely given away as a form of recognition. They are there to give recognition to your excellent work as well as an inspiration to the younger ones so that one day.. THEY CAN BE LIKE THEIR SENIORS... Go up on stage to receive that Award... that piece of paper and metal... that symbolize success. Do you want your juniors to end up EXACTLY like you?

Remember.... The Awards thingy are nothing but just 5 minutes of fame... okay.. maybe that'll be a little too short! 5 hours perhaps? 5 days???! That's it!!! That's all you will get. But at the end of the day, joining the Leo Club means a whole lot MORE than just that piece of paper. Do not deny that fact! Joining the Leo Club is supposed to be for friendship and fellowship... helping those in need.... giving shelter to the ones that needed it most.. and also to enhance personal development skills and all those!

Stop being an idiot and start coming back to reality. If you can't get yourself out of PSSTAS.... there is seriously no point for you to join any OMEGA Leo Club too... It only proved one point... I made a wrong decision in giving those awards away. My selection and recommendations are wrong and that, I should have just given it to someone else?

Hmmmmm....A good point to wonder and ponder on. Should I give any awards at the end of this fiscal year? Did I create the PSSTAS disease? Sighhhhhh.... Or could it be just.... YOU.....? Not everything in this world revolves around you my friends. Think about it. After all, LEO is a service organization ...You haveeeeee to get yourself out of the PSSTAS disease and cure yourself,....

I'll be waiting ... Will always be.... ONe day you will be cured. But till then...

Dont join any Omega Club. Go find some other SS clubs to join. And Good luck to you and your future. :)

40 Years in Service... We're Stronger than Before

40 Years in Service... Stronger than Before...

Some say this tagline as the theme for the year is kind'a SS (aka Syok Sendiri).. but come to think of it.. after 40 years of rendering services to the community.. oh well... We wanna be proud of it.. My question is.. "Why not?!"

As the District Chairperson for the 2nd term this year, I would like to state that Stronger than Before is a theme I chose to instill pride in the work that we all do. I seriously feel that it is important that we all take Pride in whatever we do. It is only then, we feel the strength to continue to do what we do best!!!! It is very important that we believe in the work that we do, take pride.. and then walk the talk whenever we do anything in the line of duty!

Further more, being a Leo, besides serving the community... there's a whole lot more reasons why one join! Just the reasons of Fellowship, Self enchancement, character development and team-building alone justify every single reason why we join the Leo Club! Hence.. after 40 years of the existence of the Leo Program in our District, and even our Multiple District 308 (Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei)... why not shout out WE'RE STRONGER THAN BEFORE!

This is seriously not an SS moment. Let's justify:

1) Existence:
We had 1 club formed (Anderson School Ipoh) back in 2nd September 1970....today District 308B2 stands at approximately 90 clubs.. and the MD308 has more than 200 clubs in total!

2) Projects
I cannot recall every single fundraising project in our MD last fiscal year, but the few in our District that really caught my attention would be the Fallen Stars Project in Ipoh and Penang that both collected Rm25k for kidney patients!!! Sri KL's Charity concert raised RM20 000 alone.. and we are talking about just 3 projects combined we have exceeded RM45k in fundraisers alone. What about others? I dare shout out no less than RM100k in total throughout the fiscal year for MD308?

How about projects last fiscal year that caught the attention of the media? The ICCP in Penang? The Kinta River Clean-up in Ipoh, the HOPE project in PJ, and the tons of other projects in Kedah that got into the media limelight? Bernama TV interviewed our IPDG Choong Kwei Loi during the ICCP... Kinta River Clean up was also covered by TV1 News and 8TV Celebrity Chat and HOPE on TV1 news too!

3) Community Service
From my record alone, and I'm pretty bad in maths.. I believe I have counted not less than 100 community service based projects in our District last fiscal year that included visits to welfare homes; bringing kiddos out for movies or picnic, family days; Sight First projects, health related projects that included seminars, exhibitions, visits and many more!!!!

4) Membership Drive
We saw an increase of not less than 15% of our Leo membership in the last fiscal year! How about that?

Hence.... with all these, in a summarized point... shouting out 40 YEARS IN SERVICE... STRONGER THAN BEFORE is justified before we even shout it out!

I am very proud of each and everyone of you as you have all excelled so much in character building and you MADE A DIFFERENCE in your life.. as well as others! Let's make things happen this fiscal year! Instead of an annual guideline, here's a quarterly one that you might want to look at:

1) Organize projects for others also.. not just amongst yourselves!

a) Fellowship Projects
We have seen many IR or IU days being organized, especially in the Klang Valley. International Relationship or International Understanding... is a term that is used to instill more fellowship amongst one another. Well, the only problem that I see is.. these projects are mainly organized for and amongst Leo members. if you want to organize a fellowship project.. can you involve others too? For example.... invite your scouts, st. john's ambulance, band boys, Interactors or any other clubs in your school to join in the fun! Let's do more with Fellowship projects this fiscal Year! Let's not just have your own SS moments (Hahahah).. let's have a more seriously fun project for your school students. For the alphas.. why not organize a Family Day in school where you invite parents and teachers to join in the fun too? (for those who smirk and start thinking... ahhhh this wont work... then shame on you! Have you ever tried it? if you havent.. then shoooshhh away that thought and start planning!)

b) Community Service
have you ever thought that your members might just be extremely bored with those visits to welfare homes where you would actually do the following:
i) Chat with old folks
ii) Sing rasa Sayang to the Children
iii) Read a stroy book
iv) Clean up the grill, window panes bla bla bla

Why not bring them out for a picnic? Why not organize a Zoo visit? Why not bring them for a movie? Why not bring them out of their homes and sponsor them to a play.. a concert? a Show? whatever! Think of something different this time round!!!

c) School Services
Please do more school services this fiscal year! Haha. Nuff said. yes. it's important. Well, law of nature teaches us this very simple fact. you want your teachers and School authorities to love you,... you must first love them! This is the theory of reciprocity! meaning, you give first.. then you expect a natural giving-back response! hence, if you start doing more school service projects... and one day, you seek for approval to go somewhere or do something else from your school authorities... the response might be different!

A task for Omega Leos....
the District projects that I intend to conduct this fiscal year would be mini- Leo Forums for the respective Porfolio Chairpersons... i.e. Environmental and Health Convention; Community Service Convention bla bla bla. Maximum of 2 days 1 night retreat where we train your young Alpha Leos on their portfolio jobs....For example.. the Health and Environmental Convention, we invite all the Health Chairpersons + Env Chairpersons... there will be workshops planned... seminars.. trainings etc etc.. on their portfolio.. giving them a chance to learn something new, and go back to their clubs... to spread the word around!! This is very preliminary. Any Omega Leo Clubs who wish to chair one of the respective portfolio Conventions.. you are more than welcomed to send me an email and we shall take it offline aye!

i) Health
ii) Environment
iii) Community Services
iv) IT
v) Fundraising
vi) Membership
vii) Public Relation

40 Years in Service Mega Scale Celebration

I am also looking for 40 Leo Clubs, be it Alpha or Omega, to organize projects around our District....marking the official launching of the 40 Years in Service term!!! As we are marking Eco and Go Green in our calendar too this fiscal year... we shall go with 40 Green Projects nationwide!

All you need to do is to propose an Eco project, be it small, medium or large scaled.. to be done in your own state. It could be planting of trees, clearing of rubbish in school, exhibition, seminars etc etc.....! As long as it is an Eco-focused project, that'll do! We need 40 of such Eco projects to be done concurrently throughout our District! yeah.. no kidding!

You need to invite your sponsoring Lions Clubs to be present, and atleast 1 school official (teacher or senior assistants or principal) for the Alphas. To those clubs who are interested, please send an email to Leo Justin Yee (justinyjw@hotmail.com), who is also the Leo Cabinet Region 4&5 Co-ordinator or contact Leo Justin at 016-566 3736.

Please propose what you would like to do if you are part of the 40 Leo Clubs doing this. The target date is 29th of August 2010, the Saturday before our actual date, at 9.20 a.m.! And on the actual date (2nd September 2010), we shall have an online celebration (more details later!)

Well... discuss this at your BOD meeting...and come up with something ya! Do note that the 40 Clubs will receive special patch for their club banners and all OCs will obtain a special pin for their contributions!

Alright.. this should be enough to keep you all busy for a while! Hahaha...

The recently ended District 308B2 LEO Camp was a blast! The 3 day 2 night camp was held at the White Resort National Service Campsite located at Balik Pulau, Penang, Malaysia. Attended by approximately 100 Leos from Selangor, Perak & Penang, the camp managed to train Leos to understand and fulfill the true meaning of L.E.O! Video is posted on the District LEO WebTV site and also available on the side bar of this blog! Instead of blogging about the camp... Just view the 10minute long snippet of the entire journey Leos went through..!! ROAR!!!

A Special Visitor from the Phillippines!!!

District 301-A2 (Phillippines) LEO Cabinet President, Leo Daryl Patrick Ruiz, will be joining us at the installation of the District 308B2 LEO Cabinet on the 19th of December 2009! Fully sponsored by Event Plus (M) Sdn Bhd & the Lions Club of Ipoh Metro N.C., Leo Daryl will be arriving on the 17th and will be leaving Malaysia on the 24th.

Leo Daryl will be attending the Charity Home Hopping pilot event @ Ipoh on the 18th of December 2009 in Ipoh (more info from the organizers later...), and then the installation of LEO Cabinet President, Leo Eliza Chia on the 19th of December 2009 in Ipoh. Thereafter, we are still scheduling for his visits to our Leo Clubs all over our District in hopes of sharing what they have done in Manila that we can do here too! Likewise, Leo Daryl will also be bringing back some of our ideas to share with his Filipino counterparts after his visit!

District 308B2 LEO Cabinet Installation!

Dear Leos,

19th December 2009 marks another milestone of success in our District as we install the cabinet officers of the District 308B2 LEO Cabinet! Inevitably it has been almost 40 years since the existence of the Leo Club program in District 308 (Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei), and B2 has taken the first step to follow the International guidelines to form our very own LEO council... but for us, we call the council ~ The LEO Cabinet.

Headed by mostly past presidents of Omega Leo Clubs, or some candidates strongly recommended by their respective club, advisors or RCCs, the LEO Cabinet is aimed at providing more on ground support to all LEO Clubs all over the district and aiding the District Chairperson & Regional Committee Chairpersons.

The LEO Cabinet is not here to take over any duties or roles, or impose any rules & regulations etc etc. It is here to assist, support and help the LEO program in anyways possible.

We hereby invite everyone for the Installation dinner @ Heritage Hotel, Ipoh, on the 19th of December 2009 at 8.00pm. Kindly RSVP with Leo Eliza @ 012-5238041 asap!

"Charity Home Hopping" by District 308B2

Here's something new. I have gotten some sponsored items that include t-shirts, books & stationery sets and so on mostly for kiddos use. Hence, to try this out, after the "Save Your Kidneys" program organized by the Leo Club of Yuk Choy, Ipoh, I brought a few Leos from Anderson Ipoh & Penang City for .. what I call as... hmmm "Charity Home Hopping"! Haha.

It sounds like those island hopping projects or shopping mall hopping projects.. or a guy night's out "bar-hopping" too! haha. Oh well, running on that line, we are going to do that. I'm openly plagiarizing an idea from the Andersonian Leos who said that they wanted to do something like an "Amazing Race"-ish idea! I was very interested and I told them.. the District will support in any ways possible. When an idea like that comes up, of course we should share with everyone!

Here's the plan. Let's do this sometime around Christmas or after....

Requirements
1. Form 1 team of not more than 5 people
2. 1 must be able to drive (like duhhhh), and has a car
3. Driver can be a Lions member, of whom will be the judge and moderator of your activities!

The gameplan:
1. Identify 10 Orphanage in your region within 30km in radius.
2. Contact all these orphanage giving them specific time on your arrival at their home.
3. Obtain approval from your sponsoring Lions Clubs and school authorities (if applicable)

The task
1. You need to go to each of the home, perform a community service at their home all within 1 hour, and the caretaker of the home MUST be happy and sign off on a form that they give you a "pass"!
2. The services include the following:
a) Toilet cleaning
b) Cooking lunch or dinner or preparing something for tea time for the kids
c) Cleaning up bedroom
d) painting?
e) Anything else - you have to propose what you intend to do ya.. and which home (with their approvals too!)

IMPORTANT:
At every home, you are required to upload a few photos of your team's activities on a designated Facebook account. At central control (chehhh wah!), someone will monitor who sends in first! Teams will be given marks etc etc!

THE CHAMPION
The Champion team will walk away with RM 500.00 worth of grant for your club to perform community service! (This means you cannot take the money for a fellowship project or to buy you a new Ipod! duhhh!)

"Saving your Kidneys" Campaign @ Kuching, Sarawak

Together with the IPP of the Lions Club of Ipoh Metro (N.C), Lion Marcus Loh, we were given the opportunity to travel to Kuching to lead the "Saving Your Kidneys" campaign by the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), fully sponsored by DiGi. The team comprised Teen Ambassador of the NKF, Azizi Zakaria, and 3 other LEO Club member that included Leo Steven Tiw (from SMI Ipoh) & Leo Aaron Gabriel & Leo Kamaldip (La Salle Klang). Initially, Marcus headed a team of locals from Kuching together with Azizi. In the 2nd week, the 3 Leos joined them.. with flights, accomodation and all expenses fully paid for by Event Plus (M) Sdn Bhd & the Lions Club of Ipoh Metro N.C.

NKF CAMPAIGN PRELUDE: LIONS NURSING HOME FAMILY DAY
Before the 2nd week of the campaign started, these 3 Leos were given the opportunity to attend the Family Day of Lions Nursing Home...

Leos Steven, Aaron & Kamaldip got a chance to take part in some of the activities too!

The gang also got a chance to meet up with LIONS International Director, Hjh Ellis Suriati, who is also the Chairperson for the Lions Nursing Home too! Pn Hjh Ellis has always been an inspiration to myself personally... and my work too. I am always inspired with high motivation especially after listening to any one of her speeches and talks. Her words of wisdom truly brings out the best in you.. If I am ever given a chance to work with her on anything at all, it would be my biggest honour and priviledge! :)

"SAVING YOUR KIDNEYS" @ KUCHING...

opportunity to witness a Live! radio interview of Azizi on SarawakFM with DJ Am!

As the Teen Ambassador of NKF, Azizi has been giving such talks in Melaka, Johor, PJ and now in Kuching. We visited non-Leo based schools LEO based schools like SMK Pandungan, SMK & SK Batu Lintang, Kuching High, St. Thomas, SMK St.Teresa, SMK Chung Hua amongst others... The main objective of the campaign is to urge school going teenagers to reduce the intake of sugar and salty food.. hence keeping their lifestyle as healthy as possible and of course, preserving their kidneys at a tip-top condition.

This trip to Kuching really was a meaningful one for us all.. as we managed to build bridges across to District308A2... With that, expertise & experience can be shared too! In time to come the Leo Club of Swinburne University (O) and the Leo Club of Georgetown Mutiara will become sister clubs.. Thus engaging in more inter-district activities! We hope that one day, challenging all odds, some alpha clubs will also twin! (Hint-hint... St.Thomas was interested when I threw them the idea! hmmmmm..)

I conducted some games too...hehe.. (bad habits die hard)

The Fellowship ended at about 9.30pm.. here's a group photo of the remaining Leos who were still very fresh despite the fact that they have school tomorrow (?) - haha.. ya ya.. it's the last day of school one said.. and some said it's already holidays! (tskk! tskkk!)

The "Saving Your Kidneys" campaign sponsor in Kuching, DiGi & Giant-Ants (M) Sdn Bhd, talent agency for Azizi Zakaria, sponsored the dinner for the fellowship. Each LEO and Lion paid an entrance fee to the event of which all proceeds , a total of RM425.00 raised, will go to the National Kidney Foundation. Even though not a huge amount... but heyyyy... this fellowship was not even planned in the first placed! It is never about the amount, it is always about the fact that we try our best in giving hope to the people in need. It's always the small steps in Making the Difference!!! :)

Aite! It's already 3.30am...last night @ Kuching ... but our work is not done yet. We are visiting the NKF Dialysis Center in Kuching tomorrow to help out whatever we can... and later a final promo of "Saving Your Kidneys" @ a local shopping mall here before we fly back to Kuala Lumpur...

Kuching has been fun. I definitely would love to come back in the near future!

LEO FORUM 2010 Log #002

A big thumbs up for Leo Club of PJI & Taman Sea for volunteering to host the "Fiesta" project in the Leo Forum. FYI, this is a new programme to instill fellowship. more info wil be available as they plan the event. This is really exciting!!!! Hmmm.. perhaps we should call it...

"Fiesta of Colours@ Leo Forum 2010"

Leo Club of La Salle Klang has also expressed interest in the Special Project for the forum. We'll do something more meaningful this time round and hopefully will create awareness about L.E.O and who will are!!!!

I'm thinking of putting a cam and recording the entire forum meeting... hahhaa.. let you guys see the stress, the anger... the gila-ness... in the FOC meeting! haha

Leo Forum 2009...

I had the privilege of talking to a bunch of young & talented bunch of Leos this afternoon @ SMK Subang Utama as we had the "inaugural" meeting of the FOC... (Well, to be exact 9to save my a**, it wasn't really a meeting, but more of a brainstorming/idea digging/creativity indulging session come briefing for 2010 Sub District 308B2 LEO Forum)

There were quite a number of questions, thoughts thrown out by the fellow Leos... concerns... dissatisfactions etc etc over previous forums.. some due to unforeseen circumstances where they are out-of-our control... some that are within our powers to change for the better.. most of all... I think one thing that came up was...

ONE VENUE!!!!

YUP. I totally agree with that one, for sure! haw haw haw! Oh well... The thing is, we have to kind'a like ensure that we house everything under one roof so that we do not have problems with the following:

i) WTH?!!! how to make it back here at 7! It's already 5.30 and we're waiting for those %%^^&*$#%^ buses that are always late!!!
ii) Where's the food?
iii) STOP SCREAMING AT US ALAN THOO
iv) I have to whatttt?!!!! walk up the stairs???? Wait? 2 lifts? whatttttttt?!?!!!!!

Also.... one of the most important objectives of a LEO Forum has never been met always...
FELLOWSHIP (???!!!)

To those who have been to LEO Forums before...
You arrive @ the hotel, no keys. Haywire. Wait. Buses suddenly comes. FOC starts to move you guys into buses. But wait.. my luggage? Chuck here! Dont worry. Go first. You go on board. Then, you forgot.. OH NO! My lunch!!! Then, you followed the whole group under the hot sun. No idea who is who, what is what. Then, you did what they asked you to do. Then, you come back. Lift overload. You climb up 11 floors up. Wait for the toilet cause the other 3 dudes are shaving. Then, you get your turn. Rushed out of the room... then, lift overload. you rush down. Then, you have to wait again. and again. then.. you arrive at the venue... too packed and over-stressed out people starts screaming. then you boh song and tu-lan, then, you still kept quiet.. mood totally gone... the food sux. then, head banging music. then.. go back. then, you wanted to go next door to ask for food & drinks, then.. the FOC comes knocking on doors and you're busted. then... next morning, you wake up.. tired as hell.. then, you went through the opening. attend some seminars... get some awards... then.. the process of the bus-hotel-lift-climb-wait-vice versa cycle takes place again... then, you had the banquet... then... the other night cycle rotates itself. Next morning, you dragged yourself up.. no breakfast or breakfast is just sandwich.. then.. YOU GO HOME. :)

Fellowship? oh come on...! Name me 10 leos from other regions whom you've met and kept in touch with since the Penang Forum? Or the Ipoh Forum???

Yea.. those stuff. But, do note, it's not going to be an easy task for the FOC this time round cause I gave them a challenge... to make this next forum... THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE... (fuyoh!) How are we able to do that... oh well...here goes:

i) All under RM200.. or RM250 perhaps?
ii) 3 to a standard room rather than 4 (wah liaoo eh.. as some said!)
iii) Do everything differently!!! (hahaha!)
iv) Each portfolio or "departments" to perfect all the smaller details in order to give that Ultimate Experience...!

Not easy. I have supervised LEO Forums for many years now, and this time round, I'm not just supervising a small or sub-department. I'm to handle the advisory board as a whole, to give that Ultimate Experience too. Not easy I must say....! But in Stephen Covey's highly acclaimed 7 Habits.... his 2nd habit is ~ "Begin with the End in Mind!"... 'nuff said!

In addition to that, we are bringing change! Our FOCC is the youngest that I have ever worked with.. oh ya, if you do not know by now, she's the current President of the Leo Club of SMK Subang Utama, Leo Michelle Wu!!! it;ll be a challenge for her to work with and control half of the FOC who is older and more experienced than her! But I have faith in what I do, what I see, what I know... And Michelle is gonna be one helluva chic you do not wanna mess with. yaaa (Eliza, you're out-dated! hohoho)

Some ideas that were thrown about was to eliminate transportation (hence, One Venue!)... an event that encourages bonding & fellowship and I'm not just talking about Fellowship Nite alone... and even more.

Recently at the joint installation of 10 clubs in Region 4, Perak, I was asked to give a speech. I have spoken about Thinking out of the Box; Say no to Impossible; Dare to Dream and be Different and many more! But, I chose to speak about COMPETITION that day.

Imagine this... you drive a local made Waja 1.6 with the (highly acclaimed?) Campro engine with big spoilers Turbo engine charged with some ah beng blue lights and lousy sound system that is abit.. erm.. Beng-ish.

Your 2 other friends drive a Sportish Evo 8 and the other, a Skyline!

THE RACE:
You Loose! (Ahem)

THE REASON?
1) You were too busy comparing yourself against foreign cars with the usual lame excuses of ~ They have experts, we don't... Their car more canggih mannn... they are foreigners....they more pro....

2) You were too busy pouring oil on the other fella's tracks... or you were finding time staying up so late at night prior to the race.. to punture their car tyres (only to realize their tyre so canggih cannot puncture!!!!)

3) You were constantly complaining about them.. them.. them...

UNTIL...

You had no time to go for "skills" training... attend perfection classes... look for sponsors for additional training... or upgrading of your engine... No time at all for you to even get that car service... you were just TOO busy bothering on what the others were doing and constantly wanting to pour oil onto their tracks.. only to realize one day.. the brick wall is right in front of you!!!!

Folks.. think!!!! ok? Some clubs are stronger. Some are not. Some have great leaders, some have great BOD support. Some.. their Lions Club so supportive until... they get everything paid for... Some even organize projects that you would never have thought of!

My response to you is,.....

Think again. Sometimes, some clubs fight and fight and fight... and they kind'a forget what the war was all about... and because winning that Top Award meant so much.. you kind'a like have lost your way .. lost your focus.. on what it really meant when you first took up that right hand and said....

District 308B2 mourns the departure of Leo James Wan

It caught my attention ~ the unfortunate and tragic incident of 3 young undergraduates of UTAR at a waterfall in Kampar.. the sms news update from the Star that I subscribe sent shivers down my spine as I thought... how sad could that be? How unfortunate. One minute they were happily enjoying a nice and cool dip, and the next minute, you realize you are struggling with their lives trying to survive the sudden rush of water. Yes. Their lives were ended terribly. I felt it so deeply and for some reason then, I didn't know why, but i had this feeling weird feeling that really paused me for a moment. Then... one of my Leos called. One of the deceased was Top Secretary from Chung Ling last couple of years back... Leo James Wan. I was shocked and I was speechless.

I didn't know what to say or do, but to pray that the family and friends of James.. would stay strong. To all Leos, life is short... live your life well... You just will not know what would happen to you next.

And to all the media who published the photo of James caught up in between the tree roots and debris... shame on you all!!! I don't believe such photos are necessary. It only adds sorrow to the grieving family.

Introducing the LEO Cabinet for District308B2!!! Well, to be honest with you, this is not entirely my idea! haha... Can't claim all the credits even though it became a reality in my term as District Chairperson for LEO Clubs for our District.

I have to give credits to Leo Vincent Khor from the Leo Club of Penang City.. formerly from Leo Club of Chung Ling High School.. I could remember clearly back in 2004 if I'm not wrong... where I attended an event in Penang...That was the time when he shared with me on the feasibility of having a LEO Cabinet. Unfortunately, during that time, he didn't garner much support... Oh well, Leo Vincent... this is a special one for ya.... your dreams of our District finalllllyyyy having our very own Council/Cabinet has become reality. Once you are back from overseas... we want to activate you again.. Am sure that given the opportunity, you would be able to share a lot of goals and inspirations with us!

Well, to those who are not aware, LEOs around the world, in their respective districts, have their very own council or cabinet. Functioning much like the Lions Cabinet, the LEO Cabinet is aimed at providing more on ground support to the many Leo Clubs in the district with the focus and guidance in accordance to the directions of the District Chairperson for LEO Clubs and RCCs too! For those who are still unclear, you may send me a private email at: alanskthoo@yahoo.com for more info! Now... basically, if you have a function, do contact the LEO Cabinet and try to get some assistance from them as well. The team is comprised of young and energetic Past Presidents from the Omega LEO Clubs. In time to come, doors will be opened for former alpha LEO Presidents too! most importantly, the Cabinet is aimed at giving you as much assistance as possible. Do note, please do not request permissions of any sort from the LEO Cabinet as all other rules and regulations as stipulated in the International constitution remains...

Up & Coming Eco projects!

Dear all,

It's been a quiet period of time due to the H1N1 scare for all. I understand that most of you are restricted either by your sponsoring Lions Clubs or school authorities.. if not, your parents! :) That's alright. Well, the flu "pandemic" (not really la, ok?) is not really over, so please.. observe all cleanliness and hygiene. The last installation to be done is the Perak Joint Installation which has been postponed till now. I hope that the committee would work fast to make sure that your B.O.D are installed officially.

Now, as for our focus in the month of November-December... We are going GREEN! :) Yup, inevitably! So, start planning some projects big small, internal external.. actually it doesnt matter! Drop me an email @ alan@eventplusmarketing.com and I might just be able to assist you to have the Malaysian Celebrities Go Green (MCG2) founders attending your event or pledging some support in terms of cash/donation or whatsoever!

As per the project as featured above, we have Leo Club of Penang City organizing a recycling design competition!!!!! This project will be carried out at 2.00pm on the 21st of November 2009 (after Pillow Fight Charity Event) @ Queensbay Mall!!!! MCG2 members Azizi Zakaria & Baki Zainal from 8TV will be present at the event! Your projects (selected) will be featured on 8TV's Celebrity Chat and selected events will be announced on air to create awareness too....especially the ones attended by the MCG2 celebrities....

In addition to this, prior to this event, is a Mega scaled project called ECO WEEK by the LEO Club of Sam Tet, Ipoh! More info will come soon regarding this project...and I certainly hope more Region 5 LEOs will also jump into the bandwagon and let's go green together!

REMEMBER: GO GREEN doesnt mean that we are asking you to change your lifestyle and walk to school from now on (Preferably, but this might not be possible as we still have to go on with our lives). It is the LITTLE STEPS that we take in our lives to actually create a "greener" environment... for example:

i) Switch off all electricity when you leave home
ii) Use 1 plastic bag less every day (Try it!!!! it's fun!)
iii) Avoid paper wastage by re-using old faxes, papers, etc etc for notes!

So once again.. let's all go green together ya! The little steps.. MAKE A DIFFERENCE TODAY! :)

When Region 1 Leos (Penang) decided they wanted to go green, they really meant it!!! I was invited to attend the GO GREEN project by Region 1 Leo Clubs, spear-headed by RCC Ong Lai Peng & the Leo Club of Penang City (O). The project, a collaraborative effort with the Marine Studies Dept. of University of Science Malaysia (USM) was in line with an international effort - INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEAN UP!

I'm very proud of each and everyone of the Leos who took part in this as the little beach clean-up exercise will definitely go a long way! Lion Dignitaries such as District Governor for District 308B2, Choong Kwei Loi; Vice DGs Hudson & Shaun alongside many other Cabinet Officers & Lions members also joined in this noble cause. The main objective is to clean up 2 coast-lines of Penang where the entire delegate was divided into two teams.

Clean? Well... one glance you would think so!

One look you might think the beach is clean... but when we start to look for rubbish carefully, you will be amazed on what you might be able to find!

Some of the finds include an old dot-matrix printer, a rusty anchor, fishing nets, heaps of bottles, polystyrene bits and pieces and many more!

When the officials gave us the garbage bags we thought that.. "It's so clean, what is there to fill up in these bags?!!!!" And yaaa.. after only 1 hour, we had more than 20 bags filled up to the max and some chemical drums that can't fit into the bags!

spoons were used. Leos from Central & Perak region might learn from this perhaps. Yes, we know that paper containers are more expensive. But heyyy... think big and selfless... think of the environment!

DG Choong Kwei Loi and I @ the dock. We had to take the boat back and not track as DG had to rush off to Alor Star for another project and I had to catch a plane back to KL. It was indeed a great project for all Leos/Lions who came!

In October, another GO GREEN project will be carried out in Langkawi. Headed by Celebrity Lion Baki Zainal from 8TV, a program called MCG2 (Malaysian Celebrities Go Green) will be launched @ the Westin Langkawi! Parts of the funds raised will be channeled to assist the District 308B2 LEO Cabinet's Environmental Department!

In December, we will fund a special Eco-Camp in Penang where all Environmental Chairpersons and Presidents of the clubs will be invited to learn how important of keeping our mother earth clean and also what does it really mean when we say... GO GREEN.

Leos, all it takes is just one step at a time.. and in return, your effort of not throwing rubbish or limiting the usage of plastic/polystyrene will go a long way....

Just over last weekend, I flew in Dina, Azizi & Baki Zainal to Langkawi as a part-sponsor for flights. Also with us were members of the media from karangkfra (you guys rock!!!) and Zeekaa from Fashion Online (Blogger yg glamer ya.. jgn main2).

Anywayz, it was a combined effort of the KL/ & local media + Giant-Ants Talent Hub... and of course the major driver is none other than Westin Langkawi!!!!

Shafie Mustaffa, 30+, lives with wife and 3 schooling kids aged 4, 11 & 12 in Langkawi, Kedah. He used to be a staff in Westin Langkawi @ the In-room service separtment. Early this year, Shafie constantly had fever and always felt tired and had body aches. It was then learned that he had Hepatitis B that attacked his liver with cancer @ stage 2!!! He has had half his liver and gald bladder cut off to sustain his life.

Currently, after his operations that cost a big bomb... he still has to go to Kedah Medical Centre once a month to get his medication which cost Abg Shafie about RM700+ a month. There was a night when Abg Shafie tried to lift a chair and it hurt him so much that the management has decided that he should stay home to rest and recover. Even so, Westin places high respect and care for its staff... they still pay for his medical needs.

Dina, Azizi & Baki with local/KL media + Westin staff visited Abg Shafie and his family at his half completed home in Langkawi.

On the very same night, a dinner was held @ Westin Langkawi where guests attended donated some small sum to Abg Shafie and family. Dina and Azizi sang some songs to entertain the guests with Baki hosting the event.

This entire outing in Langkawi stopped me and made me rewind to look at my life and what I have now vs. some unfortunate souls who aspire to have what others have but simply are slapped with bad luck and I have to say, it's probably just fate and life challenge that they have to face...

We have done a small part in highlighting Abg Shafie's plight to the public. His wife, who wants to work to suppor the family... is still waiting for our "highly efficient" social welfare department to get her a job or to support her... been waiting for 4 months now and still there's no news. I was told that the media has done quite a good job and they are bringing some of the department officers to visit Abg Shafie soon.

My main worries... are the welfare of the kids. Adik Ai Man, who is just 4, is so adorable and cute. He may not know what is happening here... but I know though.. It's not going to be easy for him as he gradually grows up and slowly understanding what's going on. I really hope that Ai Man could continue his studies... be a "someone"... and will be ableto contribute back to his family in years to come...

I would like to activate ALL LEOS... and also, call upon ALL Lions in Kedah & Penang....! We can either donate cash directly to Abg Shafie's account directly, or send goodies via Westin to the family.

How about this.. let's celebrate Hari Raya together. It doesn't mean that we have to be Muslim to celebrate Hari Raya. Whether we are Malays, Chinese or Indians. or any other races. THERE'S A MALAYSIAN that is desperately in need of our help and let's heed that call!!!! That's what I call ONE MALAYSIA!

My ears are open for any form of proposal! The one that I have is... let's all make a visit to Abg Shafie's house! I can't be flying everyone in... I would rather convert the costs into donations to Abg Shafie. So... let's go over and celebrate Raya with them perhaps? better not have too big a group.... Kedah & Penang Leos.. I leave this to you...

Well, for those who were at the Multiple District LEO Forum in Penang back in June 2009... do you remember one of our guest performers, was Soo Wincci (蘇盈之), Miss World-Malaysia 2008/2009???!!!!

Well, Wincci has just released her latest EP and I got myself a copy (original of course! ahem!)..! The Star quoted Wincci's debut as a very "One Malaysia" concept as there's a song done in 3 languages - BM, English & Mandarin! The album comprising 4 Chinese numbers, 1 BM & 1 English, is now available in all record stores nationwide!

Besides her busy schedule, Winnci is also ambassador/spokesperson to several charity organizations. Wincci is certainly one that stands out as a beauty queen + talented pretty chic who spends time doing good for the needy ones... The album is co-produced by big names like Ajai, Mac Chew etc...Wincci has performed with Hong Kong superstar Jackie Cheung and Singapore's Stephanie Sun before!

We are so happy to have Miss World Malaysia, Wincci performed 2 numbers during our LEO Forum this year and we hope Wincci will find a milestone of success in her journey in the music industry!

15 Malaysia launched!

I accompanied Baki Zainal (Celebrity Lion) to the launching of 15 Malaysia recently @ the IMAX theatre @ Berjaya Times Square. Basically, the project, fruits of labour from 15 different directors... produced by Pete Teo... was aimed at putting our social & community issues right in front of us to look at... Well, in a different way ~ short films!!!!

15 different voices (from the directors) giving a shout out about the topic that they are focusing on... and some chose the artistic ways (believe me... when I walked out of the cinema.. there were 1-2 of the films that baffled me until I got a little more explanation thereafter! hahaha) .. some chose the humour way... some chose the "dark" ways and so and so fort...! oh ya, while you have to wait every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a release of a brand new short film in the 15Malaysia project...(from Aug 17th onwards).. I have already watched all 14 of them... the 15th one is a "mystery" to all! :)

Baki, who has also contributed his time and energy... acted alongside political leaders like Khairy Jamaluddin & also Dato' Seri Liow Tiong Lai (Health Minister). The two films are entitled "Meter" & "Health Paranoia"... watch out for the release date coming soon!!!

Our country has more people than Australia & New Zealand combined! However, we have more ethnic groups than most countries of the world.. all living and shetering under one roof we all call home! There are many issues that the 15Malaysia Project is trying to reach out to the people... from racial to perception...economical to health issues... psychopath paedophillia to the "men-in-black".... all done in short films of no longer than 10 mins I think.

VDG 1 Hudson Hah recently forwarded me a powerpoint slide that has a lot of info about the deadly infectious influenza A-H1N1...As LEOs, we need to share this piece of information with as many people as possible. Try forwarding this to as many people as possible to spread the information around!

Note: I'm surprised myself to find out that if you ever get infected with the virus...even before you fall sick (1/2 days earlier...) you have a high chance of infecting those around you! Perak's Educational Department has already issued a strict order to ban all extra curricular activities! With cases found in Perak, you just might never know if the person sitting next to you might just be carrying the virus, but just not sick yet! This is the reason why the department is trying their best to prevent any large scale gatherings of any sort! As per my last email, Leos in Perak.. stay calm and be patient. Building Castles in the Air....

Am sure you have heard this one before! "Son, stop day dreaming! You can't be doing this! It's impossible...." All these negativity over the years.. from a child to a teenager... youth to adult.. we were told that we should stop day dreaming... don't think about big goals... THINK BOUT YOUR STRAIGHT A's in your exams before anything... bla bla bla bla bla!

Yup.. As a child, my mum too, always use proverbs and constant nagging on me... (She's a retired English teacher.. what do you expect?!!!) Even at school, when I had some big ideas on something, my friends or teachers would have told me that... "Stop day dreaming dude! It won't work!!!!"

See.. the Wright brothers in the early stages of building a plane... were laughed at, cursed, bla bla.... to the max! Now, we fly from KL to LA in less than 18 hours~!!!!

Have you seen the size of the first computer and phone? What about the mobile phones? The huge ones where we call them "water tumblers...", or the "tai kor tai" mobile phones? For those who have used the Tai Kor Tai mobile phones before, have you ever thought that the mobile phone 5 years from then... would be smaller than the size of the palm that can do video conferencing and surf the internet???! When the first computer was created, do you think that anyone would have thought that... the computer in the next 20 years, would be a million times faster and can be stored into a small bag?

Mostly ~ the answer is no... don't you think so? How about the next set of questions?

i) Cars will no longer need petrol and solar cells would be good enough to power up the engine? Wheels? OMG, that is just so... 21st century mannnn! Cars will hover on magnetic surfaces where there is a device that controls the flow and it just simply hovers on the road?

ii) Teleportation? - this is big. hahaha... Ever watched the Fly? Star Trek where the equipment demolecularize an item and remolecularize at another point?

iii) Speed - you reckon Warp speed is possible? (waaayyyy faster than the speed of light if you are an arden Trekkie fan!!!)

iv) Mobile phones? ~ Gee, who needs them?!!!! You tap your watch and the person you are talking to, there's this hologram image that transmit data, video & audio.. you simply "tap" in the air.... It's like when you tap on the watch.. it goes

What about the thought of everyone no longer live in house but spacecrafts overlooking Mars? I would call that a Castle in the air!!!! or.. simply.. the entire Condominium floats in the air.. yup!!!!

WE JUST HAVEN'T DISCOVERED THE TECHNOLOGY TO SUPPORT THE CASTLE IN THE AIR YET!!!!

Therefore... folks, remember!!!! There's no such thing as building castles in the air... no such thing as.."Hahahah.. you have got to be kidding me! that's impossible!!!".... "That's rubbish".... "Stop day dreaming"

Eventually, whatever goes around comes around. Most importantly you need to ensure that YOU... know what you are doing!

old castle.... has their old problems. By waiting to buy the castle alone, took me ages.. pursuation... hints... encouragements... loads of work had to do...begging....

But.. after the purchase... there might be problems too... the workers may not listen to the new boss... the senior workers are just too conservative in change....

Sighhhhhh!

Hence... should I buy an old Castle, or Build a new one?!!!! Alpha or Omega....

Postponement of Region 4 (Perak) Joint Installation

Dear All,

It is very unfortunate that the Region 4 LEO Joint Installation has been postponed to a later date. This is inline with the call from the Ministry of Education to avoid unnecessary public gatherings or extra curricular activities that can best be avoided as the status of the Influenza A-H1N1 is pretty serious in our country!

As the District Chairperson for LEO Clubs in our District, I would like to call upon all the clubs in our district to avoid joint projects or carrying out mega/major projects that involve the public or other clubs. This is not the right time to do that. I understand some of you, by now, would be saying... "Chehhh.. last time that Lion Alan asked us to do more cross regional projects and joint projects to create more fellowship amongst all regions... bla bla bla"....

Ya.. please read between the lines.. NOW IS NOT THE TIME. Let's dwell into some info that you might already be aware of, but not necessary taken note of...:

According to Wikipedia....The 2009 flu pandemic is a global outbreak of a new strain of influenza virus, officially named the "new H1N1", first identified in April 2009, and commonly called "Swine flu." It is thought to be a mutation of four known strains of the influenza A virus, subtype H1N1: one endemic in (normally infecting) humans, one endemic in birds, and two endemic in pigs (swine). Transmission of the new strain is human-to-human, with cooked pork products safe to eat as the virus cannot be transmitted by eating foods.

The outbreak began in Mexico, with evidence that Mexico was already in the midst of an epidemic for months before the outbreak was recognized. Soon after, its government closed down most of Mexico City's public and private offices and facilities to help contain the spread. In early June, as the virus spread globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak to be a pandemic, but also noted that most illnesses were of "moderate severity." The virus has since spread to the Southern Hemisphere which entered its winter flu season, and to many less developed countries with limited healthcare systems. Because the virus was spreading with "unprecedented speed", and many clinics were overwhelmed testing and treating patients, WHO stopped requiring countries to report all cases, but is still monitoring unusually large outbreaks.

The virus typically spreads from coughs and sneezes or by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the nose or mouth. Symptoms, which can last up to a week, are similar to those of seasonal flu, and may include fever, sneezes, sore throat, coughs, headache, and muscle or joint pains. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that most cases worldwide have been mild so far and most hospitalizations and deaths have been of persons that also had underlying conditions such as asthma, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, or a weakened immune system. Then again, Dr Anne Schuchat from CDC thinks, "this is a virus that's capable of causing a spectrum of illness that includes severe complications and death". "It's very important we take this virus seriously".

As the virus spreads easily between people, through the air or surface contact, those who get the flu are recommended to stay home from school or work and avoid crowds to avoid spreading the infection further. WHO does not expect to have a full vaccine before the end of 2009, and vaccines available sooner may be limited and given first to healthcare workers, pregnant women, and other higher risk groups. Two or three injections will be required for maximum immunity from both the swine flu and seasonal flu. There is also concern if the new virus mutates further, it could become more virulent and less susceptible to any new vaccine.

During this time....it doesnt mean we should take a break from the LEO Clubs. Our Lionistic Hours should continue.. It doesnt mean we should be using the H1N1 issue as an excuse to cut back on LEO activities. When you are a LEO... there's no taking time off! There's also no such thing as a part time LEO.

Here are some suggestions:

1) ONLINE PROJECTS
i) CONTINUATION OF STORY......

Have you ever thought of something as creative as this? I'm not very IT savvy. Perhaps, we can start a story online. Then, people start to contribute ideas. For example.... We give this story 4 main characters. Then, the story passes on from club to club where each club is given the opportunity to contribute not more than 300 words in the continuation of the storyline... After a club is done with that, then, the story moves over to another club... we travel from North to South or vice versa!!!!! Hence, the 4 main characters whom Leo Club of XXYY created, might end up as aliens for that matter... when the project is ended with the Leo Club of PPQQ.

Hahah.. that'll be fun aye? Then, who knows, we can sell the story to some producers and maybe.. the story might be turned into a movie? drama? etc etc?

ii) Fellowship Project Online!

Erm.. go figure something out aye???

iii) Competition/blogging/ etc etc

Create something lah!!!! Anything! Competition... contest.. whatsoever to spread info, love... sharing and caring spirit etc etc etc!!!! Get all your members to be involved. See how far that will take you!!!!

2) Concentrate on your school
Alpha clubs.. this is the time where you can focus on building great ties with your school authorities, teachers, students and everyone @ your school! The Leo Club of SMK Bandar Kinrara assisted the school in the spreading of info on the H1N1 virus and also partially funded hand sanitizers for the students. Such move definitely would create good bonds with the school authorities as they would definitely appreciate all that you do.

Besides that, concentrate on organizing internal activities @ your school. Remember in this year's requirements for Alpha Clubs for awards, you MUST organize or hold a minimum of 10 school services! Exams are coming, have you ever thought of organizing a talk for your LEO members.. for example "Teknik-teknik menjawab soalan PMR"

Imagine this... the Membership Director can do this.. use this as a membership drive! HOW? Well, simple!!! :P All you have to do is hire or invite a speaker for a particular topic related to the up & coming examinations. When that takes place, all you have to do is to open the talk to ONLY LEO members. Design some flyers/posters (printed on recycled or used paper ya!! ahem ahem)... then put a clause there....

Non-Leo members are invited too, but you need to register with a fellow LEO member!!!!! When your friends/school mates who are NOT Leo members come to attend the seminar, take 10-15 minutes to show them what LEO is all about before, or after the Seminar!!!!

OUt of the 10-20 non-Leo members who come, you might just have 3-4 who might stay as Leo members after all!!!!!

There are MANY, MANY School services that you can organize.. hence, during this 1-2 month "peak" period of H1N1 season I should say... stay away from too crowded or packed functions. Try focusing on building your club....!

As the DC for Leo, I can only discourage you from big gatherings, but have no power to stop you from proceeding. All we need is just ONE case of a Leo member attending a Leo function getting sick... just imagine that.. the entire good name of your club.. or the LEO Club events in our District will be tarnished?

Hmmm.....you make the call!

Region 5 just joined Region 4 in their quest to stay "un-green" by not heeding my call to ban all usage of polystyrene/styrofoam in LEO events where recently the RCC meeting & School for incoming BOD saw these materials being used to serve food.

My call....move slowly... educate your members and friends and then... move towards using paper and re-usable materials!!! Google up "Go Green" and there are loads of methods and ways you can learn on how.. you can really "Go Green"!!!

Think about this ~

One Hectic Month....!

DISTRICT 308B2 GO GREEN
As the District Chairperson for LEO Clubs for the new fiscal year, I am very happy to see many Leo Clubs thinking "green!" these days! BRAVOOOO to all of you!!! FYI, Celebrity Lion, Baki Zainal from 8TV will be launching a special Go Green! project together with his media friends and partners. Funds will be raised for Leo Clubs in our District to conduct environmental projects in this fiscal year and some other organizations too!!! Yeayyyy!!!!

The good news is, in October, we'll have a mega launch of the project, and we will be organizing a beach clean up in Langkawi Island! 10 LEO Club members from our district will be selected from our District.. (most likely the Environmental Directors/Chairpersons of your club) to take part in the beach clean-up and a special Go Green Forum that will be attended by celebrities, media and other environmental agencies too! More info to come up real soon on this one!!!! :)

Leo Ng Zi Qin from the Leo Club of Penang City (O) headed a project called "3R" in line with Penang's aims of becoming the first "Green state". The project was also supported by Leos from Chung Ling High School, Convent Datuk Keramat and Penang Chinese Girls' High School. Leos managed to collect old newspapers, aluminium cans, cardboards, plastic bottles from a 5 block radius. The items collected were sold to a recycling center and RM86.70 was raised.

The Leo Club of SMK Taman Sea organized their installation @ their school hall with the "Go Green" concept in mind! They served food using reusable utensils made of plastic and metal... and NO disposable plastic utensils & polystyrene plates/cups were used! BRAVO, Taman SEA LEOs!!!!!!!!

The Leo Club of La Salle Klang, added more trees and did a clean-up of their LEO Garden recently!!! Bravo! Expand your LEO Garden,... plant more trees...create more "Green" @ your school. in fact, the entire school could be your "Leo Garden" project. This might be too big or ambitious a project for you Leos.. but think about it... why not work with your school and keep your teachers, students and Principal happy! Instead of only taking care of a Leo Garden, why not go bigger!!! :P Why don't you organize "Green" projects, and create more spots @ your school to plant more trees... hence, making the entire school ground a mega sized "LEO Garden!!!"

SERVING THE COMMUNITY...

Visit to Beautiful Gate, Kampar...Home for the disabled (mental/physical)
The Leo Club of Penang City (O) took the initiative to organize a project out of their region, Penang, and Organizing Chairperson, Leo Teoh Him Keat said that, this was a great experience as sharing and caring for the needy ones have no boundaries at all. They took the effort to jointly organizing this project with the Leo Clubs of ACS and Pei Yuan, Kampar. Other guest Leos who attended the event included Leos from Anderson & Sam Tet, Ipoh as well as Petaling Jaya Integrity too!

Leos and Lions played games and many Lions contributed a little something and the money was used to purchase items for daily use... Bravo Penang City!!!! Besides doing charitable work, you managed to build bridges across 3 regions to foster better fellowship amongst Leos and Lions!!!

The Leo Club of Tanjung Penang, Chung Hwa & Union High School organized a trip to the Hospice Pure Lotus home...Our Leos fed the patients there, cooked for them, cleaned up the surrounding area and done loads of other work for the home in aid of charity! This certainly has helped and assisted the management of the home and eased their jobs in the name of charity! Bravo Leos!!!!

The Leo Club of Assunta, PJ & the Leo Club of Ipoh Metro (O) organized a joint visit to the Rumah Seri Setia Old Folks Home. Leos played games @ the home with the uncles and aunties and also donated food supplies and other items to them too! Teacher advisors of the Assunta Leo Club and Leo Advisor Lion Ivan Lim were present too!!! Great support from the advisors!!!! Parts of the visit were documented by Zenny Lyn, host for Jalan-jalan with Zenny on the LEO WebTV channel... click here to view!

The Leo Clubs of Sam Tet, Ave Maria Convent & Yuk Choy Ipoh jointly organized a visit to the Moonlight Care Centre Old Folks Home. Heeding the call for more regional/joint projects... the 3 clubs decided to carry out the visit with a more personal touch... that is to cook food together with the uncles and aunties at the home.....RCC for Leo Clubs Region 4, Lion Mary Goh also joined them. Unfortunately Perak LEOs still have yet to GO GREEN. Look at the many polystyrene boxes used during the event. Wonder if this could be reduced in the next visit... wouldn't that be good? :) (Hint!!!! Hint!!!! Do I have to start penalizing clubs for using polystyrene boxes for events to finally make you guys see what Go Green really means???!!!!)

1st August 2009 marked a historical and memorable date in the District 308B2 history as this was the inauguration night of our District Governor, Lion Choong Kwei Loi. DG Choong, who hails from the Lions Club of Bidor Orient said in his inaugural speech that "Move to Grow".. and "Growth with Actions" come in line with each other.. as one is an international theme and the other, his theme for this fiscal year. He added that with the strength that we have amongst the Lions in the district, he wishes to see more true Lionism in the fiscal year and hopes to have more fellowship at the same time... with the main intention of "Growth.. with Actions"!!!

Fellow Leos, let's heed our DG's call.. let's move together with him.. 'Grow' together with DG to a greater height!

District 308B2 LEO Clubs 'celebrates' the life of highly acclaimed director, Yasmin Ahmad, who gave us the marvelous masterpieces like SEPET, TALENTIME and loads of touching, heart-warming teary Petronas Festive Ads.... She's truly one Director & story-teller that can touch our hearts by making us stop and think for a couple of seconds... and make a U Turn where necessary... of which some situations that may change our lives forever! People around the world are mourning for her, and I strongly feel that above us all... Kak Min would not want that.

She'd want us to stay happy always and every drop of tear that rolls down should be of joy and happiness rather that sad and darkness.

Kak Min, you'll truly be missed. Your work on Talentime moved me so much, it made me stop to think many times. "Save Your Kidneys" Campaign at your school!!!!

Dear Leos,

In our quest this fiscal year to provide as much assistance as possible to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), we hereby would like to propose a few projects for you for your regions. Here they are:

i) School visits by NKF Teen Ambassador, Azizi Zakaria
With the launching of Celebrity Leo, Azizi Zakaria, as the Teen Ambassador of the National Kidney Foundation, he was entasked to visit 50 schools in the Southern Region to spread the awareness of the dangers of kidney diseases.

Azizi and team have done almost 20+ schools to date. During this hour-long session, students were shown videos of kidney patients' interviews, kidney treatment processes and also methods to prevent end-stage kidney disease!

Due to great response from teachers and students, NKF has decided to explore the Northern region! All you need to do is to send me an email alan@eventplusmarketing.com, and I shall explain to you the steps to bring Azizi and his team to your school to conduct this meaningful talk. Do note, as Azizi is just a teenager himself, his talk is not the typical health talks you experience in school! It's very interactive! :)

For now, we are opening this talk to Region 2-4 only (Perak, Penang & Kedah). If your club is interested, drop me a mail ya! We will explain everything in detail. Oh ya, forgot to mention, all costs are paid for! Hence, your club doesn't have to come up with any cash! :)

ii) Organize grouped visits to National Kidney Foundation @ your area.

There 23 dialysis center around the country that service 1000++ patients. Like Azizi when he performs for showcases and concerts around the country, Azizi would take time off to visit and lend a helping hand to the dialysis centres. YOU TOO... can o your part! Log on to www.nkf.org.my, check out where is the location of the nearest dialysis centre near you... drop me an email, and I will help you arrange for the visits to the centres. There, you can help the nurses, talk to the patients, cheer them up by singing in groups or just a simple chat would be sufficient! Groups of not more than 15 per visit only ya... as too many people will tend to jam up the operations.

iii) "Kick-A-Life" Charity Futsal Tournament

Grabbing Opportunities ....!

Sometimes, in life, opportunities come by quickly. You may have 10 people who walk into the Leo Idol audition room and 2 makes it, the rest go home... and perhaps there might be the next 10 who go in and none got pass the chopping boards. Sometimes, one wonders, is it all about talent? Is it all about luck? Is it timing?

Why is it that some of the MBA or Degree holders who graduate from a university get only about Rm3k ++ a month (for the last 5 years).. and there's this other dude who failed his SPM.. yet he's driving a BMW? How come out of the 50 MBA graduates, only 5 made it as CEOs and the other 45... probably working under them?

Let's ponder on this:
1) THIS WORLD IS SOOOOOOO ****-ing UNFAIR
2) HE GOT THE JOB BECAUSE THAT'S HIS UNCLE SITTING IN THERE!!!!
3) SHE'S PRETTIER...or... HE'S SMARTER....more handsome.. THAT'S WHY lahhhh!

Have you ever thought of it the other way round:
1) This world sux, but I'm going to wiggle my way through! No matter what!
2) Ya.. He got the job cause his uncle's a damnnnn powerful man. But, I dont care. i'm going to proof to the world that no matter what it takes, I don't need an uncle, dad or whoever to bring me up. I will work hard and smart ... and achieve my goals and dreams
3) Ya I know she's a hot chic. People adore her. But that won't last. I'm not going to loose to a bimbo. I'm going to work harder and show the world.. that.. life is not always about looks and beauty!

To summarize....
Yup... I agree with everyone! LIFE SUX! The World and reality Sux! The next question is..

Life sux to the end. Reality's cruel...! When you know you are driving towards a dead end, why not make a U Turn rather than crashing your car into the wall? When you climb to the top of the mountain only to find out that it's the wrong peak....(!!!??) Are you going to jump off the mountain and die? Or are you going to descend.. and climb the right mountain so that you still get to achieve your goals and dreams?

Life is never fair to everyone. A fact that is duely inevitable. However, if you learn how to go around it, learn to adapt to it... YOU LIVE!!!! You SURVIVE!!!! AND...

YOU WIN!!!

There are a couple types of people amongst us... or rather, at times, we feel different not because of that's that.. but simply because the environment.. the people.. MAKE us that way... Take for instance..

(1) Your job is not too important (you think...)
and.. oh well, you think no one's looking ya (hohoho)
So...You just decide to sleep it off!

(2) You wink your way to get what you want...
(3) You scream & cry like a baby to get your "milk"...

(4) You rub shoes to achieve your goals
(5) You steal someone's ideas and make it your own
(6) You complain...complain...complain.... and do a little work,
and shout out to the whole world about what you've done!!!
(7) .... none of the above...

If you are no.7.. then, you're in a big mess I should say.. oh well, more than half of the world's population is probably no.7!!!! What does this tell you? YOU have to face all of the above in your quest to be successful!!!!!! Do you need to be like them.. to be successful? NOOO!

Your life belongs to you. YOU choose which path you wanna take. YOU choose what life you wanna lead. It's all about YOU! If you want to lead a life that is completely problem-less, I suggest you run up to KL Tower and do a bungee jump without the string. There's no such thing.

YOU will have to face all the people who are no.1-6. YOU have to wiggle your way through.. YOU have to find the light at the end of the tunnel.. and YOU have to source for that strength in yourself to fight on.. to carry on! No matter come what may!!!

So.. comes the title... Whenever you see an opportunity coming right up infront of you... Do not hesitate... STRIKE!!!! Opportunities come and go easily. To challenge and win over the No.1-6s.. YOU have to find the right opportunity and if it's a crossroad and life threatening moment... MAKE A DECISION and live with it! Take the opportunity! Make a U turn along the way if necessary, but if you see an opportunity, TAKE IT! Don't hold back!!!! Go all out!!!

CLD PROGRAM
Continuous Leo Development

I attended the 1st CLD Board meeting recently in Penang and those who attended were none other than CLD Board Chairman IPDG Kenneth Saw, VDGs Hudson Hah & Shawn Lee, past CLD Chairman PCC Allan Cheah and myself as DC. There are not much changes in the education syllabus and please take note ya.. All CLD plannings can proceed. Here's a brief goal that I would like to achieve:

i) 100% of LEOs in District 308B2 (joined >3 months) to pass the Orientation paper
ii) Speakers for Orientation level to include Senior Omega LEO members (approved!!! yeyyy!)
iii) All BOD to take at least L, E or O...!
iv) 25% increment in Proficiency holders (currently at 174)
v) Start Omega Leo Leader level (We have not done this ever!!!!)... atleast to have a minimum of 20% of the Proficiency to start!

Oh well, if your members have not sat for the Orientation... do ensure that you contact your RCCs and arrange for a session ya!

Support Alvin Chong, Leo Idol 2008 Champion @ Astro Talent Quest!!!!

Alvin Chong, who hails from Penang, finished his SPM with loads of As on the results slip... was a Penang Regional Finalist of DiGi CelebriTeen 2007.. also made it to the Wild Card selection, and did not make the cut to the CelebriTeen finals.

Thereafter, Alvin continued his quest to pursue his dreams of being a recording artiste... he never stopped!!!! He performed at cafes in Penang, and also performed for roadshows and events held in Penang too.

When Leo Idol 2008 came about... he thought that it would be a good chance for him to try it out again in a singing competition. Hence he did! he managed to get no.2 @ the Penang Regional finals and again failed to make it to finals. However, luck was once again on his side when he was chosen as the Wild Card finalist and he was given yet another chance! At the grand finals of the LEO Idol 2008, he beat the Penang Champion Jason Soon, and grabbed the District LEO Idol Champion, held in Ipoh, in-conjunction with the Leo Forum Fellowship Nite!

Thereafter, he joined the Astro Talent Quest as one of the youngest finalist, and made it through gruesome comments and insults far worse than any of the ones that you can get @ the Leo Idol... and was kicked out into the "PK" round.... But, returned as a Wild Card (againnnnn!!!!!!!!!!)... and now.. a finalist in the Top 5 of Astro Talent Quest!!!! Come 25th July, Alvin will know his fate... whether his wildcard luck.. will grant him that one wish he aspires to get... that one goal.. that one dream...

A Hectic Weekend....!

Well, being newly appointed as the District Chairperson for Leo Clubs for District 308B2, I have to say, last weekend was really a hectic one for me! As i have promised to all before, I will try my very best to attend all functions if possible, however, my hands are tied as the timing was all packed!

Travelling from PJ to Ipoh to pick up 4 Leos... then to Alor Star.. then back to Ipoh for a CLD seminar.. then rushed back to PJ for 2 events... the words of "Wah liaoooooo ehhh!" almost came out of everyone that knew our route! Hahah... but then again, it was really fun to meet up with Leos & Lions from all over the district... Inevitably, new friendship blossomed... and borders widened...

We left Alor Star after the dinner event, about 11pm-ish... and arrived no earlier than 3am in Ipoh! Slumped down on the bed and slept for a couple of hours...!

Next, as early as 830am, The Leo Club of Sam Tet hosted the 1st CLD Orientation seminar & examination for new members. Other clubs also participated in the Orientation. A record breaking 130 Leos sat for the examination!!!

An innovative idea emerged @ PJI's installation.. this is where Taylor College's
Mr Adrian Kuah, founder of "Breaking the Silence", a program to create awareness
and education on HIV/AIDs gave a short speech and presentations on the topic.
He also urged all Leos to consider taking part in this program to further educate the young
ones today on the danger of this disease.

We shouldn't wait till the yearly LEO Forum to meet Leos from other regions!

Sharing and caring need not be amongst just Leos from your region/district!
Let's expand that border so that the entire District 308B2 will come as one closely knit family!

Firstly, decorate your blog nicely ya. Put videos (related ones laaaa aiyooo).. photo links, tabs, applications of any kind (again, related ones ya.. don't go link to Britney's site for no reason - unless shes auctioning her shoes and panty hoses for charity!!!! Like.. duhhhhh?!)

You have till end of July 2009 to really "pump-up" your club's blog/E-newsletter!!!! The winner will be announced in August!

Also, you need to embed the NKF new video onto your site to qualify ya! Here are the html codes => Download NKF-Video HTML codes here!

Steps:
i) Open your blogspot account. Click on "customize"
ii) Click on "Add a gadget" and a pop-up window will come out
iii) Select HTML/Javascript

Oh ya, some tips:

To those who are travelling to PJ to attend the PJI Installation & Anniversary on the 11th of July 2009 , kindly ensure that you obtain the following ya:

i) Parental consent
ii) School/Advisors consent

From Ipoh
If you are coming from Ipoh by bus, try booking PERAK ROADWAYS. This is because Perak Roadways stop at Kelana Jaya LRT station. To those who take the train, you have to find a way to get to Kelana Jaya LRT station, better by Taxi (costly) or by train itself via link change @ KL Sentral. Please enquire before you book any tickets. The easiest and most convenient is via Perak Roadways

From Ipoh/Penang
If you stop at Pudu, most likely PJI will send a representative to your location, and guide you from Pudu to take LRT to Kelana Jaya where they have transportation to ferry you to the location!

The function starts at 2.00pm, kindly book the earliest bus/train so that you will not be late.

Putting on the thinking cap!!!!

Greetings Leos!!!

My deepest apologies for not posting anything in the past week! Having to spend 5 nights at Tropicana Medical Center was really a test of patience .... My little baby boy.. codenamed, "Baby V" is safely back at home @ Damansara Perdana with Cheryl, my wife. Both mum and baby are safe and sound. Thanks for all the kind wishes and I sincerely appreciate it all.

Now, back to business!!!!

We have a few new items lined up and kind'a firmed.

1) District 308B2 LEO Council
Yup, acting as the "Cabinet" of Leo Clubs in our District, although with authorities limited to being advisory panel only, the Council will commence.. finally!!!! We are currently looking for the heads.. namely Chairperson, Vice Chairperson 1 & 2, Secretaries & Treasurer to start out with. Thereafter, we'll look for the portfolio chairpersons. These positions are mainly opened to all Omega Leo Club members only. If you are interested, you have to fulfill the following criteria:

i) Existing Omega Leo member in good standing
ii) Currently does not hold any positions in the FY 2009/2010 Board of Directors of your club

2) LEO WebTV
Yup. This is a braaaaaaaaaaaand new concept! Haha. We'll have our very own "mini astro" channels. Have you ever wondered if you have that thing in you to be a host? As in... do you think you will be able to do something like this???

(We're sorry, this was recorded with the upmost hi-tech super duper camera... ermm. the Lumix cam that I bought 2+ years ago.. resolution.. even less than my phone. hahaha)

Well.. we're going to produce some series of "Jalan-jalan cari makan"-ish kind'a programs for the web, solely for the LEO Club. If you really think that you can speak well, non-stop until the director says CUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!.. well, send me an email too (alan@eventplusmarketing.com) with a most recently taken photograph of yourself. We are looking for both Mandarin and English speaking LEOs, or even both! :)

3) DISTRICT FELLOWSHIP #1: PJ
Anyone in Region 5 (Selangor), who is willing to host a simple fellowship breakfast or lunch on the 12th of July? This is because Leos from other regions will be attending Leo Club of PJI's installation on the 11th of July (Saturday)... and I am looking for 1-2 Leo Clubs in Selangor region to host a simple getogether as some of the Leos from Perak & Penang are staying the night and leaving only on the 12th. I suppose a visit? Or just a simple breakfast at DU's famous dim sum place.. or maybe just lepak at Cineleisure? if there's 16 of you, let's do Movietime @ the Platinum seats @ Cineleisure perhaps? Don't worry bout the $$$$... Any clubs interested? :)

Crossing borders... bridging fellowship...

Dear Leos,

In the up & coming fiscal year, I really hope that I can see more cross regional activities done. In the current fiscal year, we had the official Twinning Ceremony between Leo Club of South Kowloon & the Leo Club of Ipoh Unity... one ceremony done in Ipoh, and another in Hong Kong with members of each club sending few to attend each one of them!

Then, there was the Leo Club of Anderson & La Salle fellowship-charity XMas project to an orphanage in Klang too....Most recently, we had lots of Penang Leos taking a an entire busload of people down to Ipoh to attend Ipoh's Region 3 Farewell Ceremony...

The last 2 forums, the one in Ipoh & the one in Penang, were organized by Leos from all around the district!

Of course, there are lots of factors to consider prior to attending or jointly organizing any cross regional or district projects. i.e. advisors approval, parental consent etc etc etc. Once all these rules have been followed, I don't see no reason why Leos from around our district can't interact with each other and Lepak together? Think about it! Being a Leo doesnt mean that we are to confine to only our club... So, if there are functions around the district, try to attend (with permissions ya. don't forget that! Verrrrrry important, otherwise I get myself into deep trouble when you quote me by saying.."There.. that Lion Alan lahh.. he say can go attend wan .. go attend lorrrr...")

Cross regional or district projects give us an option to expand our circle of friendship. Thus, bringing all Leos in the district one step closer!

10th July (Friday) - Kedah LEO Joint Installation @ Alor Star
11th July (Saturday) - Leo Club of PJI Installation

Now.. I'm driving up to Alor Star on the 10th afternoon, passing Ipoh. I can pick up several BODs on the way to attend the Kedah event. Maximum of 5 ya... and stay a night in Kedah. I'll pay for your hotel. :) Next morning, 8am, I have to do an Orientation seminar & exam @ SMJK Sam Tet, Ipoh. Either I drop you guys off, orrrr... you can follow me down to KL, to attend PJI's installation.

I can have a maximum of 5 people to follow me from Ipoh's side to go up or down? Anyone from Region 5 (Selangor) who wants to follow me to Kedah, you are more than welcomed! Give me a buzz if you want to follow me on this roadtrip ya!

i) E-REPORTS
Although over the last 5 years with DC Lion Andy Lim's new directions, we have started E-Reporting .. and ever since then, we have reduced the usage of paper reports. Not only did we save paper, we have also saved loads of postal expenses etc! The rules over the years remain, ya...

All secretaries, you need to submit your reports by email, and this year, I only accept E-Reporting and will not accept any form of paper report. Hence, I would like to push for 100% E-Reporting. Clubs without access to the internet, well we live in a modern IT world now. It's time to start pushing yourself to learn how to send a report via email.

ii) E-Newsletters/Blogs
Please stop all printed newsletters from 1st July onwards. Use online blogs to update your members, other clubs or even the public! Don't just use your club's blog as a bulletin board. See what I have done with the District LEO 308B2 blog? In the fiscal year of 2008/2009, I used the Perak LEOs Blog to update everyone, post articles, post reports of projects carried out, link clubs to the world of LEOs... and many more! Check this out, it's still active for now.. :P

iii) E-Invites
Send out invitation letters to other LEO Clubs via email. Post on your Facebook, Friendster etc etc to create awareness about your club or club's activities via the internet! Paper invites are very 1990's by the way (haha!).. hence, remember! Use the Facebook "Events" application to invite guests too! There are so many ways to invite people...via the internet!!!

DC's Club visits
On another note, if your club has any meetings, BOD, general or even project meetings, do give me a hauler ya! This would be a great opportunity for me to do some club visits. Thinking Out of the Box....

When I was just in Form 4 back in some good old years... I attended the LEO Forum held in Penang that time and met a senior Lion who was an ex DC Leo. To be honest, attending the Forum as the incoming Treasurer, all I could think about is badges, more badges...fun.. lepak... hot chics, and more hot chics.. (Lame, I know. Oh come on!)

The Lion asked me and my bunch of friends...what is being a LEO all about?! Late Every Occasion?!! hahaha.... We answered Leadership Experience & Opportunity of course!!! The Lion laughed at us... He told us...

"Yes... officially that's the answer. But, have you ever thought that.. besides Leadership-Experience-Opportunity..... LEO can also stand for

LET'S ENJOY OURSELVES!!!

You MUST think out of the box. That's what being a LEO is all about. At your age, conforming to everything that is set within boundaries... is boring! Ask yourself this:

1. Have you ever challenged yourself to do the extra-ordinary?
2. Have you ever thought about doing something that you have never ever thought of doing?
3. Have you been taking the answer, "NO!" always????!
4. Is there such a thing call IMPOSSIBLE?

The list can go on, but I believe you get my point!!!! I'm not asking you to change the constitution and by-laws! I'm not asking you to sack all your BOD and re-elect! I'm certainly not asking you to change your sponsoring LIONS Club, duhhhh!

Have you discovered that there is a zone or area within your scope of capabilities... that you have never, ever touched on before? Have you ever thought that you might be able to organize something that ... might just work?

PUSH YOURSELF TO THAT LIMIT. Bring yourself to the next level!
Remember, nothing is impossible. As long as you put your heart to it, there's always a possibility anywhere in the world, in our mind.. in our lives!!!!

I'm challenging myself to succeed in the following for the up & coming fiscal year:

i) 3 day District LEO Camp...
Perhaps in an island? haha

ii) District LEO Day..
With big celebrations that include exhibition, march past, concert etc etc etc

iii) Our very own Forum?!
haha
iv) District LEO Idol with a difference
(hmmm....)
v) District Omega LEO Conference...
Hmmmm.. no curfew at night, but within boundaries? haha...!

vi) Our very own District LEO Council...

Hmmmm.... the best think about thinking out of the box.. it doesnt stop at your age. If we can keep on thinking out of the box in everything that we do, we keep ourselves one step ahead of the rest...And you wonder why the other club got Top Club... or the other dude got a Top Award and you didn't? Have you ever pondered on that before?

Well... start thinking out of the box!!!! :)...On an extra note ~ Lion Nelson... if you are reading this.. thanx for the most inspirational words I've ever gotten from a Lions member. I've never forgotten that statement.. ever! :)

Here are the guidelines for the District 308B2 LEO Program for the fiscal year 2009/2010. In order to commit to improvement and continuity, I have ensured that rules and regulations of the current fiscal year under the leadership of DC May Cheah be maintained and certain guidelines be added in.

One of the highlights of the up & coming LEO Forum 2009 in Penang will be the
SUPER HEROES NITE!!!!
That's the official theme for this year's Fellowship Nite!

We heard that the FOC has stated that anyone who is not dressed as a 'Super Hero' will be purnished!!!!! haha.. Let's see what will happen!

Besides that there will be a major line up of celebrities who will bring down the house.. so to speak!!!! :P

Hi there everyone! This is Lion Alan Thoo, appointed District Chairperson for LEO Clubs for the up & coming fiscal year 2009/2010! This is a big challenge for me, and I certainly hope I will be able to keep up with the fast paced LEO Clubs in our district! :)

Being the Regional Committee Chairperson for Perak for the last 2 fiscal years have certainly prep-ped me in taking on this role. I hope that I will be able to carry out my duty as well as current District Chairperson, Ln May Cheah is doing, and not forgetting also other former DCs like Ln Ong Lai Peng, Lion H'ng Chee Wei, Lion Oeh Eng Soon, Lion Andy Lim and many more.

I'm indeed honoured to be given this opportunity and appointment. I was a LEO member when I turned 15 in Form 3 back in those days! :) I remember the first project that I attended with my seniors was a visit to the Jelapang Old Folks Home in Ipoh. Back then, the condition of the home wasn't like the present state. The old folks practically lived in a rumshackle and dilapidated building, if I may say. The feeling of sadness and pityful filled me and still sends shiver down my spine whenever I think back. However, over the years, as an Alpha Leo and eventually a proud member of a former Omega Leo Club (Leo Club of Ipoh Omega members converted the club into the Lions Club of New Century back in 2005), I put in a lot of effort in organizing projects in the home to ensure that the old folks there would eventually live in a better way. I believe I have done my fair share of contributions.

Well, we are in the midst of preparing for the fiscal year and my team and I working real hard to have a smooth transition from DC May Cheah's fiscal year over to the new one.
